GM Updates the Chevy Volt to Address the Battery Uproar

January 5, 2012 12:00 PM Text Size: A . A . A General Motors announced today that the company has updated the Volt?s design in response to the battery fire that occurred after a side-impact crash test.

First, GM says, it will reinforce the battery?s support structure to keep the battery better protected during a severe accident. The Volt will also now be outfitted with a sensor that monitors the level of liquid coolant that?s used to maintain the battery pack?s temperature. Finally, a tamper-resistance cap now sits on top of the coolant reservoir to prevent the system from being overfilled.

GM found itself with a public controversy on its hands late last year. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performed side-impact crash tests on the Volt, and the car performed well in its ability to withstand the initial impact. In some instances, however, days or weeks later the Volt?s lithium-ion battery pack would spark or catch fire. GM gave Volt owners loaner cars to drive while the automaker and the regulators investigated the problem.

None of GM?s announced changes will increase the Volt?s price, the company says. Existing Volt owners will be notified that their cars are eligible for free upgrades.
