?Hey, watch where you?re going!? An older man growled as he looked down at Wynnie. She pressed her hands to her chest and looked down sheepishly. Wynnie resembled that of a lost sheep in a school uniform: she had a baby face and big brown eyes, along with short brunette hair that had cowlicks in the weirdest and most annoying of places. Her hands were small as well as the rest of her. It looked like she hadn't hit puberty yet and still held that chubby innocence.

?S-sorry,? she muttered under her breath. The man in a black beanie sighed.

?Tch, whatever.? he waved her off and pushed past the crowd to get a better look for the First Placement Match of the day. All the students had arrived early, including Wynnie, although it was hard for her to get here. She didn?t like large crowds, she wasn?t used it?since she was from the country and all. Looking around Wynnie could not spot her Spirit, but knowing her well, she knew that her Spirit Ash would want her to get as up to the front as possible.

Squishing herself in-between people and crawling under them, she made it to the front and looked down at the stage. Everyone looked down on the stage that all the fighting would take place in. You could say it was like the Globe Theatre Shakespeare had performed in, or a Roman Coliseum just?.instead with Chinese architecture. This building?more like a temple?had 20 floors. The first ten were unused during fights because of safety reasons. There were 10 Skyscraper temples just like this at the back of the school in a well spaced circle: 5 for the Spirit Placement Exam and 5 for the Spell Placement Exam. Wynnie was in Temple 1C, on the 11th floor.

Suddenly, all the chattering in the building came to a whisper?and grew to nothingness. Snapping out of her daze, Wynnie looked down to see a woman with flaming red hair. Her hair was tied up into a high ponytail and smoothly ran down past her butt. A pink scarf with white and dark red stripes was wrapped around her neck, and over her torso was a black bikini with red flames. A long black glove was on her left while a short black glove on her right. She walked with confidence in her mini-shorts and high-top socks with bulky boots. She looked incredibly intimidating and seductive.

The woman smiled and raised her hand in the air.

?Sorry I am late everyone! I am the Headmaster of this school, Shinigami Sprite. I wish you the best of luck in todays Placement Exam! Don?t let the nervousness get to you, and just try your best!!!? she beamed brightly, slightly giggling. Wynnie smiled. She seemed like a nice person.

?Is what Losers say!!? she yelled and pointed up at the stands, a menacing look on her face. Wynnies eyes widened. Her voice?was suddenly so deep. ?Babies don?t make it far in this world, fight like your life depends on it!? She pumped her fist up into the air and everyone in the crowd copied the gesture. Loud shuts and roars and growls echoed throughout the room. Wynnie covered her ears and hung her head low. People were leaning over the stands, smiling, laughing, and yelling?this place was weird. It was scary..she wanted to go home.

?That?s the spirit,? Mrs. Shinigami laughed and put her hand on her hips. ?Kerlston,? she whispered, flexing out her arm, lights began to gather at the end of her hand, forming into a gun. Clicking the huge gun, she rested it on her hips, and shot a bullet up into the sky, yelling, ?Let the games begin!!!?

Beauty queen: I feared Christian date rape suspect

By R. Stickney, NBCLosAngeles.com

A California beauty queen has claimed she was a potential victim of a man charged with raping a woman he met on a Christian dating website.

Sean Banks, 37, of Del Mar, is accused of raping a woman he met through ChristianMingle.com in November.

And now, a contestant in the Miss California 2012 pageant claims Banks threatened her while out on bail.

"He was aware that I had evidence and he started intimidating me from that point not to talk to police," Victoria Kinney said.

Banks faces a number of charges including rape by force, digital penetration by force and residential burglary in connection with an alleged attack in La Mesa more than three months ago.

In that case, a La Mesa woman told police Banks arrived at her home on Nov. 12, was sexually aggressive toward her and ultimately raped her. Banks was arrested by La Mesa police on Feb. 11.

"This woman is alleging that he pushed the boundaries and attempted to have sexual intercourse with her against her will. We think when you see all the facts that will prove not to be the case," said defense attorney Gretchen von Helms.

Banks, a graduate student of Pepperdine University and a former lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, appeared in an El Cajon courtroom Friday to face two additional criminal charges.

One of the charges involves a date rape allegation from 2009 and the second charge involved dissuading a witness, or threatening a witness not to talk with police.

Kinney, Miss Irvine-Orangewood in the 2012 Miss California pageant, said she met Banks through the ChristianMingle website.

Banks used an alias in their communication, said Kinney's attorney, Daniel Gilleon.

Investigators said Banks has been known to use several aliases online including Rarity, Rylan, Rylan Butterwood and Rylan Harbough.

'Didn't listen to my instincts'
The beauty queen said Banks was very charming at first but then he made comments that she took as threats.

"I didn?t listen to my instincts," she said. "In those instances and looking back, I absolutely should have."

"We discussed meeting for lunch when I returned and when I returned, he called me to let me know he had been arrested for rape," she added.

Gilleon said his client was terrified, but wanted to testify about her experience to support other possible victims.

"She?s a Christian woman. She believes it?s her duty at this point to come forward, share her story generally and ask other women to come forward," Gilleon said.

He said the comments made by Banks to Kinney were "clearly threats."

As a result, Judge Charles Ervin approved on Friday a protective order banning Banks from having contact or getting within 100 yards of Kinney.

Banks was taken into custody on a "no bail request" on the new charges even though he had posted $500,000 bail on his previous charges.

Judge Ervin called it a unique request and told defense attorneys he had never seen the situation in 25 to 30 years.

Von Helms said she and her co-counsel Jan Ronis had no time to review the additional charges and asked for a bail review early next week.

"Anyone would feel terrible about these types of allegations and he certainly does," Von Helms said of Banks.

"This young man -- he?s a Ph.D. candidate. He?s a college graduate. He served in the military. There are a lot of good factors about him that will come to light as we proceed in this case," she said.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 26.

Are central banks really necessary?

Some analyst argue that a central banking system is only necessary when an economy operates with paper money. Others think that isn't always the case.?

By Joseph Salerno,?Guest blogger / March 1, 2013

Gerald P. O?Driscoll?s hard-hitting piece in today?s Wall Street Journal, "Debunking the Myths about Central Banks" is well worth reading. Among others, O?Driscoll addresses the myth that ?central banks are intrinsically necessary for market economies.? As O?Driscoll points out, however,

"A gold, or any commodity, standard places a natural limitation on money creation, which is the resource cost of extracting the commodity. It is only with fiat (paper) money that central banks are necessary to control the money supply."?

One should not conclude from this that O?Driscoll fallls prey to the myth of a central bank that is able to scientifically control the supply of fiat money independently of politics. In fact, he explodes this myth by pointing to the Fed under Chairmans Martin, Burns, Volcker, and Bernanke all of whose polices were powerfully shaped by the interests of the Presidents they served under. O?Drisoll concludes: ?A central bank is necessary as long as an economy is wedded to a fiat currency. And it may at times behave independently?but not in the face of large-scale budget deficits, as we have today.?

Duke melds two rats' minds through the internet, Spock may not approve

Duke University melds two rats' thoughts over the internet we're not sure Spock would approve

Some would say the internet already lets us share every minute detail of our thoughts, much to our followers' dismay. Duke University isn't deterred by our behavior -- if anything, it just took oversharing literally by connecting two rats' minds in an experiment, first in a lab and ultimately online. Electrodes attached to the brain of a host "encoder" rat in Brazil processed the motor-oriented mental activity for a desired behavior, such as pressing a lever on cue, and converted it into a signal that was then received by a "decoder" rat as far away as Duke's US campus. The majority of the time, the decoder rat performed the same action as the encoder. Researchers also found that rewarding the encoder alongside the decoder created a virtuous loop, as treating the first rat for a job well done focused its attention and improved the signal strength.

We're not sure that Vulcans would endorse this kind of mind meld, though: apart from immediately depriving the decoder rat of self-control, prolonged testing led to the same rodent developing additional sympathetic reactions to the encoder. There's also concerns that the test was too binary and didn't reflect the complexity of the whole brain. All the same, Duke's study is proof enough that we can export brainwaves in a meaningful way.

Huawei Ascend G710 press render leaks out, details still sparse

Huawei Ascend G710

Huawei has released plenty of devices between CES and MWC, but there are surely more in the pipeline as press images of a Huawei Ascend G710 leaked out today. Like so many devices nowadays, the G710 is going to have a 5-inch display, but this one will purportedly have just 720x1280 resolution. That's quite a bit lower than the previously-announced Ascend D2 from Huawei, which has a full 1080P panel. The G710 will have capacitive keys at the bottom of the screen though, which leaves physically more space on the screen than the D2.

The only other known spec is a 1.5GHz quad-core processor, which is a Huawei staple lately. No other specs, availability or pricing is coming out on this one just yet, but we would be surprised if it ever hit the U.S. market.

The Science Behind Why The White House Should Use Emoticons In Its Emails

smiley-face-wallpaper-widescreen-001People who read my emails must think my parents are Mr. Rogers and double-espresso. For a very strategic reason, I write with more emotions, LOLs, and exclamation points than a Twilight chatroom: humans are prone to misinterpret text-only communications. A strategy of unmistakably positive emails could have saved the White House from its most recent crisis of having to prove it didn't send threatening emails to journalist Bob Woodward.
