Will crisis-hit Ireland rebel against EU?

Adam Patterson / Panos for msnbc.com

Carpenter Tony Kenny, 27, believes that continuing economic troubles in Ireland will force him to move to Australia to find work.

By Ian Johnston, msnbc.com

KILDARE, Ireland -- Families ripped apart, pay cuts, hundreds of thousands without work, homes lying empty, teenagers with little hope for the future: Many in Ireland have been brought to the brink of despair by a dramatic economic collapse and the harsh remedy prescribed by the European Union.

But unique among the EU's 27 members, Irish?voters were?Thursday giving their verdict on the policies of austerity as a backlash grows across the continent in countries like Greece, Spain and France.?

Both sides in the debate are playing the politics of fear. Ireland's coalition government and much of the establishment implore voters to agree to tight controls on the national debt -- contained in the "Fiscal Stability Treaty" -- warning that failing to do so would result in the EU refusing to provide any further bailout cash.

The "no" campaign counters this is just scaremongering -- saying Ireland would not be cut adrift in time of need -- but engage in some of their own. Austerity will only lead to countless more years of hardship, they say, calling for policies to grow the economy.

Polls put the "yes" campaign ahead, but both sides agree it will be close.

'The country is on its knees'
Outside control of Irish affairs is a sensitive subject. Some talk angrily of Ireland surrendering sovereignty hard-won in the War of Independence with the U.K. to new political masters in Europe.

Student Nadine Lynch describes seeing her friends leave the country for better economic prospects.

Joe Kenny, 59, a former sergeant in the Irish army, is among those planning to vote no. "The country is on its knees ... austerity is not working," he told msnbc.com, as he stood in front of the abandoned barracks where he was once based in Kildare, about 30 miles west of Dublin.

He believes that the fiscal treaty will give too much control of Ireland's future to the EU's leading nations, particularly economic powerhouse Germany.

"They own us now. We've no control, no sovereignty, nothing," he said. "Angela Merkel [Germany's top lawmaker] ... put a little moustache on her and she's Hitler."

It is a comparison others have made, however unfairly, but Kenny has reason to be angry.?"My son is going to have to emigrate ... All our best are going to Australia or America," he said.

Greek tragedy: Economic crisis sparks brain drain

His carpenter son Tony Kenny, 27, said business was "drying up,"?but was stoical about moving overseas, as generations of Irish have done before him.

"I suppose it has to be done, doesn't it?" said Kenny, who is married with two young daughters.?"A few mates of mine are over in Perth [Western Australia]. The work is savage over there, they are booming. It would get me on my feet anyway."

Unemployment rate triples
Ireland's economy was once growing so fast it was dubbed the "Celtic Tiger." But the property bubble burst, the banks were thrown into crisis, the government got deep into debt spending billions to bail them out. Ordinary Irish people are now paying the price.

New taxes -- including a Universal Social Charge paid by all citizens -- have been brought in and more are on the way, such as a new charge on water.

According to the latest figures, the standardized unemployment rate was 14.3 percent -- about 430,000 people -- compared to just 4.5 percent in April 2007. Henry Healy, a distant cousin of Barack Obama, recently joined their ranks, according to a report on Tuesday.

Signs of the economic collapse are all around with boarded up buildings and half-finished neighborhoods, particularly in the Dublin commuter-belt, which includes County Kildare.?

The brick pillars at the entrance to the Coneyboro Estate in Athy, south of Kildare town, have a certain air of grandeur. But deeper into the neighborhood, it becomes clear something went badly wrong. Near-completed houses are empty, windows open, fireplaces ripped out. Weeds grow in the street and foundations lie unfinished.

Ghost towns tell the story of Ireland's faded dream

"Who wants to buy here? ? These houses are worth nothing," said Athy town councillor Michael Dunne, the only elected Sinn Fein representative in County Kildare. "There's empty houses all over the place like this."

Adam Patterson / Panos for msnbc.com

Sinn Fein's only elected representative in County Kildare, Athy town councillor Michael Dunne, is campaigning for a "no" vote in Thursday's referendum.

'Giving away our sovereignty'
It's a palpable sign, he said, that "we're all victims of the recession." The developer was bankrupt, the unemployed and those whose salaries had been cut could not afford a new house, and the taxpayer might have to step in to finish the estate.

"We cannot write austerity into our budget, that's going to be permanent, forever," Dunne warned.?"As a Nationalist-minded person, a democratic socialist, I'm totally opposed to what's happening in the country and giving away our sovereignty to the Germans."

A "no" vote, he said, would "raise the flag for the rest of Europe to follow suit."?

According to Article 46 of the Irish Constitution, any amendments to it?must be passed by both houses of the Oireachtas, or parliament, and then approved by a referendum. Thursday's vote is latest in a series about Ireland's relationship with the EU.

Greeks withdraw $894 million in one day

Another sign of the country's plight is the number choosing to make a new life in another country. In the year to April 2011, 76,400 people left Ireland,?the highest number for at least 25 years and more than double the figure in 2006.

It is a hard decision. For Ruth Lalor, 18, the ties of home are strong.

"I would like to stay in Ireland. Australia ? I know they've got a better life over there, but I really would find it hard leaving my friends and family," she told msnbc.com on Monday night from the sidelines of a Gaelic football match, pitting Kildare club Round Towers' second team against one from Castledermot.

She would like to study physiotherapy, but cannot afford it and is working in a clothes store, hoping she will be able to do take a course in five years' time.

Rising college fees
With Lalor was Nadine Lynch, 18, an English and history student who works as a waitress. Lynch plans to leave Ireland as soon as she's finished her degree or when rising college fees force her to drop out.

The pair have been friends since they were six and can hardly bear the thought of being parted. "She's coming in my bag with me," Lynch said. "I'm just living here day by day. I think about getting a degree and getting out of here, but if it gets better, obviously I'd like to come home."

Adam Patterson / Panos for msnbc.com

English and history student Nadine Lynch (right), 18, sits with her friend Ruth Lalor. Lynch plans to leave Ireland when she finishes her education and wants to take Lalor with her.

Lalor, a talented Gaelic footballer, said she would probably not "bother" voting in the referendum, questioning whether it would "make a difference." Lynch said she was still making up her mind, but added "we fought for independence and now we're handing everything back to the EU."

There was no good news on the field to lift their spirits, with Round Towers losing. They were playing "a bit bad" Monday, Lalor said.

So much for the 'Spanish Dream': Euro crisis turns suburbs into ghost towns

Jim Waters, a former Round Towers player and owner of Southwell's Stores in Kildare's central square, is one person determined to stay exactly where he is.

The grocery and convenience store was opened in 1841 by Patrick Southwell, Waters' great-great grandfather.

'The 1980s were worse'
On Monday morning, Waters, 60, and his friends were playing a game of Gaelic football with an imaginary ball in the store and he was relatively unconcerned by all the gloomy talk.

Like most of the small business owners that msnbc.com spoke to in the town, he plans to vote "yes".

"Nothing lasts forever, this is my third [recession]. The 1980s were worse ? after every recession there's a high."

While the recession would come to an end, the shop would not, he insisted. "I cannot foresee that happening. There's always going to be a need for a shop," Waters said. "The future is safe, oh God yes."

Adam Patterson / Panos for msnbc.com

Jim Waters, 60, stands in his shop -- opened by an ancestor in 1841 -- in Kildare's central town square Monday morning.

But, one of his suppliers, fellow "yes" voter and father-of-six John Leamy, 50, of nearby Newbridge, had a different tale to tell.?"A lot of the businesses I was supplying are no longer there. My customer base has practically dried up," he said.

Once he delivered candy to up to 40 clients, now he has 10 to 15 and has taken a second job. He has a different view of the Germans than people like Joe Kenny."I have a liking for Germany and the work ethic. I can understand why they are trying to protect what they have," Leamy said. "The whole European project ? wouldn't have worked without them."

He may be keeping his head above water, but others are struggling.

A different Ireland
Grace Coyle, 24, who lives in Naas, just up the road from Kildare town, spent a year travelling in Australia and the U.S. and returned home a very different Ireland in 2009.

She was without a job for about 18 months, and then joined a Tus work-training scheme; Tus is Gaelic for start. It pays only a little extra above welfare, but Coyle said it had helped her get a couple of days a week working as an administrator with a security firm. "You need work ? There's only so many times you can clean the house," she said.

Adam Patterson / Panos for msnbc.com

Meet Grace Coyle and other people in Ireland facing renewed austerity in the European Union's new fiscal treaty.

Others, Coyle added, are not so industrious. "My cousin is 19 and she's living out on her own. She doesn't have any get-up-and-go in her and I see that in her friends," she said.?

From the Irish Times: The treaty explained

But she doesn't want Europe to impose extra financial rigor on Ireland, and plans to vote "no" in the referendum. "We're abiding by everything they're asking for ? I don't want it to be written into the constitution, into the law."

Her Tus supervisor, Adrian Brown, 50, knows what its like to be jobless. He had expected to work as a crane operator -- he spent eight years in New York City where he helped build Trump Tower -- until retiring. But on a cold Tuesday morning in Dublin in January 2009, Brown was called down from his crane and told the company had gone bust.

He was out of work for about 16 months -- "the time spent at home, it's not a healthy time" -- but then went back to college and then got his current job.

"There's a great sense of achievement ? it's great to see lots of [people] taking their first step to getting back to work," he said.

Adrian Brown, a supervisor at a Tus training scheme for the long-term unemployed, describes the mental toll of losing his job in 2009.

Brown said he'd be voting "yes", but reluctantly. "We cannot bite the hand that feeds us."

'I'm just coping'
Staff at the County Kildare Leader Partnership, which overseas the Tus scheme, have had their pay cut by between 5 and 7.5 percent, in common with many in Ireland.

Geraldine Meaney, 48, secretary at Scoil Na Mainistreach, the school in Kildare town, said her pay had been reduced by 5 percent in January after a three-year pay freeze, while her husband's had been reduced by 10 percent. "I'm just coping, everybody pulls in the belt. You just cut your cloth to suit yourself."

Athy town councillor Michael Dunne describes why this vote is important in the context of Irish history.

Her 17-year-old son is in high school, but may decide to emigrate to the U.S.. Asked how she felt about that prospect, she replied, "Do you want to see a grown woman cry?"

It is a sadness felt by thousands. Kenny senior said he would be "absolutely gutted" if his son left for Australia.

"I know it's only a plane ride away, but it's the other side of the world. Why should he have to do that?"

Retailers back Red Tractor logo - Scotland Food and Drink

The second Red Tractor labelling report reveals that retailers are using the Red Tractor logo on a greater proportion of their British products than last year ? increasing from 66% to 70% this year.

Date:

Wed, 30 May 2012

Source:

Red Tractor

Building on the success of last year?s inaugural report, Red Tractor Assurance has launched its latest labelling audit which analyses the use of the Red Tractor logo on British own-label products in Produce, Dairy, Meat and Bakery in UK retailers. The independent audit recognises best practice and identifies missed labelling opportunities by category within each retailer.

Richard Cattell, Head of Marketing, Red Tractor Assurance said: ?Following the debate and thought stimulated by last year?s audit with UK retailers, I am delighted to report progress over the last 12 months. This year we found 70% of British products surveyed carried the Red Tractor logo, an improvement on 66% last year.??

The Red Tractor logo can now be found on around ?12 billion worth of food and drink products at retail sales value. The report also found that nearly half of the qualifying products carried the Red Tractor logo on front of pack.

Richard Cattell, continued: ?Whist we?re pleased with the steps forward, the results highlighted that 3 in 10 products that qualify to carry the Red Tractor logo do not currently use it, which means there is plenty of opportunity to go after.?

Fresh Dairy (Milk and Cream) and Fresh Meat (Beef & Lamb, Pork and Poultry) categories both had the highest proportion of British products carrying the Red Tractor logo, 94% and 87% respectively. However, the report identified significant opportunities within Fresh Produce and Processed Meats. Richard Cattell, added: ?An area that represents a significant opportunity for Red Tractor is the frozen category, as it is a growing area and consumers are looking for extra reassurance that frozen meat or produce it is still a quality product.?

Braves snap 8-game skid, beat Cardinals

By PAUL NEWBERRY

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:54 p.m. ET May 29, 2012

ATLANTA (AP) - Two big swings and one last 98-mph fastball left the Atlanta Braves with a giant sigh of relief.

Dan Uggla hit a three-run homer and Michael Bourn also went deep Tuesday night, leading the Braves to a 5-4 win over the St. Louis Cardinals that snapped an eight-game losing streak - Atlanta's longest in more than two years.

"This is not an indication of what's going to happen the next day or the next week or the next month," Uggla said. "But it definitely snaps the feeling of, `Aww, man, are we ever going to win again?"'

Bourn led off the bottom of the first with his fifth homer of the season, tying a career high. Uggla made it 4-0 in the third, sending one into the seats in left-center. The Cardinals closed within a run in the seventh, but Eric O'Flaherty and Craig Kimbrel each worked one perfect with two strikeouts to preserve the win.

Kimbrel earned his 14th save in 15 chances, ending the game by fanning Matt Holliday on a fastball that clocked 98 mph. The right-hander pumped his fist and slapped hands with his teammates, everyone looking as though a weight had been lifted.

"Everyone knows how bad we've been scuffling," Uggla said. "When you get that first one, it eases the tension, eases the pressure. We know what it feels like to win again. It was obviously a big night for us."

Randall Delgado (3-5) worked into the sixth, allowing three runs, and the Cardinals got closer in the seventh on Yadier Molina's third RBI of the night, a run-scoring single. He went 4-for-4, including a solo homer.

Moline liked the previous day better, when he had just one hit but the Cardinals won.

"I feel good," said Molina, who is hitting .560 (14-for-25) with three homers and 11 RBIs during a six-game hitting streak. "At the same time, I'd trade my 1-for-5 from last night and the win and not take the 4-for- 4 and the loss."

Jake Westbrook (4-4) struggled to keep his sinker down and lasted only five innings.

"That's a couple of games in a row I've put us in a hole," he said. "I've got to do a better job. With the sinker that I have, that should keep the ball in the yard."

The Braves shook things up before the game, sending reliever Kris Medlen to the minors so he could stretch out his arm and return to the big leagues as a starter. He was replaced on the roster by speedy outfielder Jose Constanza, who started in left and batted ninth - ahead of Delgado - as manager Fredi Gonzalez looked for ways to shake the team out of its worst slump since a nine-game winless stretch in April 2010.

"Why not?" Gonzalez said.

The unusual lineup paid off in the fifth, when Constanza led off with a single, moved to second on Westbrook's errant throw to first, raced to third on Bourn's deep flyout and sped home on Westbrook's wild pitch. That gave the Braves a 5-2 lead, which turned out to be just enough to hold off the Cardinals.

"He brings the team a little energy," Gonzalez said of Constanza, who also sparked the Braves last season after being called up.

Molina had his third four-hit game of the season. He began the comeback with a run-scoring single in the fourth, when St. Louis scored twice to halve Atlanta's lead to 4-2. Molina followed in the sixth with his eighth homer, a one-out shot into the left-field seats. Then, in the seventh, he came through again with an RBI single to right off Jonny Venters, making it a one-run game.

But Venters, whose struggles have apparently cost him his role as the eighth-inning setup man to Kimbrel, escaped the jam by striking out Matt Adams with runners at first and third.

"Jonny made some strides," Gonzalez said. "He got them hitting ground balls. Now we've got to work on getting them to hit ground balls at somebody."

Westbrook gave up only five hits, but the long ball sent him to his fourth straight start without a win. Bourn drove a 2-2 pitch into the seats to start the Atlanta first, tying the career high for homers that he set with Houston in 2008. There's plenty of time to take down that mark, with four months left in the season.

"I'm not trying to hit home runs," Bourn said. "They just come when they come."

Bourn took the more customary leadoff role in the third, working Westbrook for a one-out walk. Martin Prado singled on a hit-and-run and Brian McCann grounded out before Uggla came through with his eighth homer.

Notes: The Cardinals outhit the Braves 10-5. ... Gonzalez didn't say who Medlen will replace in the rotation once he returns from Triple-A Gwinnett, but left-hander Mike Minor (2-4, 6.98 ERA) is the most likely candidate to get bumped. ... Atlanta also snapped a streak of four straight games giving up at least seven runs. ... Skip Schumaker's single in the fifth extended his hitting streak to seven games.

As of right now, both Samsung is amidst fighting Apple?s requests for a preliminary injunction against its Galaxy Tab with the argument that the 4Gcapablity if its tablet means it does not directly compete with Apple?s 3G equipped iPad 2. It was just earlier this month, Apple succeeded in reactivating a motion for a preliminary injunction against its rival?s tablet. The appeals court overturned Judge Lucy Koh?s denial of an injunction for the Galaxy Tab, but left the ruling against an injunction on smartphones.

According to FOSS Patents, Samsung filed for an opposition to Apple?s claims. Florian Mueller states that Apple is ?starting from a far better position? with its new motion for an injunction, although a win is far from being guaranteed. In order to win, Apple would need to convince the court of four factors: ?likelihood of success on the merits; likelihood of irreparable harm; balancer of the equities; public interest.? After the appeal court overturned Koh?s assertion that Apple?s design patent was invalid, Apple is more likely to convince the court of the merits of its case. Meanwhile, both Koh and the federal Court of Appeals are in agreement that the case for irreparable harm has been established. Mueller did note that at least one circuit judge believed Apple should prevail on all four factors.

Mueller continued to note that ?Judge O?Malley indicated between the lines that she considers Samsung a reckless infringer whose Galaxy Tab 10.1 should be shut down sooner rather than later, and she clearly wants patent holders to have great access to injunctive relief.? A large part of Samsung?s argument against the injunction in Friday?s filing is based off the claim that, since Apple lacks a 4G version of the iPad 2, the 4G Galaxy Tab doesn?t compete directly with the device. The company also claimed that an injunction would disrupt its partnership with carriers since Samsung has teamed up with carriers to sell the Galaxy Tab 10.1 with 4G contracts.

It was noted that Samsung?s argument is ?not without merit? though it was also believed that it?s ?too weak to avoid a preliminary injunction.? Samsung didn?t take into account that ?4G devices are backward-compatible? and that customers might use them in off-line mode or on 3G networks as well. ?Even if someone thinks that 4G is desirable, I doubt that the number of customers who are out to buy only a 4G tablet is limited.?

The report continues to point out that Samsung is likely to lose during the injunction phase because it could have modified its product in the time since Apple first filed its preliminary injunction motion but chose not to. The Korean company released a redesigned Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Germany last year in order to work around a sales ban in the country.

Radioactive bluefin tuna crossed the Pacific to US

Scientists said the radiation found in the fish came from Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant that was crippled by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. (AP Photo/Chris Park, File)

(AP) ? Across the vast Pacific, the mighty bluefin tuna carried radioactive contamination that leaked from Japan's crippled nuclear plant to the shores of the United States 6,000 miles away ? the first time a huge migrating fish has been shown to carry radioactivity such a distance.

"We were frankly kind of startled," said Nicholas Fisher, one of the researchers reporting the findings online Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The levels of radioactive cesium were 10 times higher than the amount measured in tuna off the California coast in previous years. But even so, that's still far below safe-to-eat limits set by the U.S. and Japanese governments.

Previously, smaller fish and plankton were found with elevated levels of radiation in Japanese waters after a magnitude-9 earthquake in March 2011 triggered a tsunami that badly damaged the Fukushima Dai-ichi reactors.

But scientists did not expect the nuclear fallout to linger in huge fish that sail the world because such fish can metabolize and shed radioactive substances.

One of the largest and speediest fish, Pacific bluefin tuna can grow to 10 feet and weigh more than 1,000 pounds. They spawn off the Japan coast and swim east at breakneck speed to school in waters off California and the tip of Baja California, Mexico.

Five months after the Fukushima disaster, Fisher of Stony Brook University in New York and a team decided to test Pacific bluefin that were caught off the coast of San Diego. To their surprise, tissue samples from all 15 tuna captured contained levels of two radioactive substances ? ceisum-134 and cesium-137 ? that were higher than in previous catches.

To rule out the possibility that the radiation was carried by ocean currents or deposited in the sea through the atmosphere, the team also analyzed yellowfin tuna, found in the eastern Pacific, and bluefin that migrated to Southern California before the nuclear crisis. They found no trace of cesium-134 and only background levels of cesium-137 left over from nuclear weapons testing in the 1960s.

The results "are unequivocal. Fukushima was the source," said Ken Buesseler of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, who had no role in the research.

Bluefin tuna absorbed radioactive cesium from swimming in contaminated waters and feeding on contaminated prey such as krill and squid, the scientists said. As the predators made the journey east, they shed some of the radiation through metabolism and as they grew larger. Even so, they weren't able to completely flush out all the contamination from their system.

"That's a big ocean. To swim across it and still retain these radionuclides is pretty amazing," Fisher said.

Pacific bluefin tuna are prized in Japan where a thin slice of the tender red meat prepared as sushi can fetch $24 per piece at top Tokyo restaurants. Japanese consume 80 percent of the world's Pacific and Atlantic bluefin tuna.

The real test of how radioactivity affects tuna populations comes this summer when researchers planned to repeat the study with a larger number of samples. Bluefin tuna that journeyed last year were exposed to radiation for about a month. The upcoming travelers have been swimming in radioactive waters for a longer period. How this will affect concentrations of contamination remains to be seen.

Now that scientists know that bluefin tuna can transport radiation, they also want to track the movements of other migratory species including sea turtles, sharks and seabirds.

Russia blames 'both sides' for Syria massacre

Fighting continues as UN peace broker Kofi Annan arrives in Damascus. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

By msnbc.com news services

Updated at 3:34 p.m. ET: MOSCOW -- Russia further backed away from its support of Syrian President Bashar Assad on Monday, saying his government bears the main responsibility for the violence in the country and calling for a full investigation into its role in the deaths of more than 100 civilians in Houla.?

"Both sides have obviously had a hand in the deaths of innocent people, including several dozen women and children. This area is controlled by the rebels, but it is also surrounded by government troops," Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said after talks in Moscow with visiting British Foreign Secretary William Hague.?

Meanwhile, international mediator Kofi Annan, who arrived in Damascus Monday for talks with senior Syrian officials, said he was horrified by the killings in Houla and urged the Syrian government to take bold steps to show it was serious about reaching a peaceful solution to the country's crisis.

Lavrov spoke a day after Russia agreed to join the rest of the U.N. Security Council in blaming the Syrian government for attacking residential areas in Houla, a collection of villages near the central city of Homs. The council, however, avoided saying who was responsible for the massacre of at least 108 men, women and children.?

Opposition activists said Assad's forces killed at least 41 people in an artillery assault on the city of Hama shortly after the U.N. Security Council condemned Friday's massacre in nearby Houla. The authorities in Damascus issued a denial that troops played any role at Houla, rejecting the U.N. version of events.

Lavrov said there was no doubt that government forces had used artillery and tanks to shell Houla, but he noted that many of the dead appeared to have been shot at close range or tortured.?"The guilt has to be determined objectively," he said. "No one is saying that the government is not guilty, and no one is saying that the armed militants are not guilty."?

Visiting British Foreign Minister William Hague (L) looks at Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov during their meeting on Syria in Moscow on Monday.

But Lavrov did issue?some of Russia's harshest criticism of Assad to date, saying the Syrian ?government "bears the main responsibility for what is going on" because it is failing to provide for the security of Syrian citizens. He hedged the criticism by claiming that Syria's government is facing an increased threat from terrorists, whose bombings have the "clear signature of al-Qaida."?

Alexei Malashenko, a Middle East expert with the Carnegie Moscow Center, said Russia can no longer defend Assad's government and may be warning him that he needs to change his approach.?

"Bashar Assad is driving himself and Russia into a corner," Malashenko said. "If this goes on, Russia will have no other option" but to pull its support. "Bashar has definitely gotten the sense that he may lose Russia's sympathy and he may step back a bit."?

Syria blamed terrorists for the Sunday massacre of more than 100 people, including children. Washington isn't buying it. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

Lavrov and Hague both called for greater efforts to implement special envoy Annan's six-point peace plan, which calls on both sides to respect a cease-fire.?

Speaking shortly after arriving in Damascus, Annan said he expected to have "serious and frank discussions" with Assad. The two men are due to meet on Tuesday, according to the Syrian Foreign Ministry.

Clinton: Syria leader's 'rule by murder' must end?

Annan said the massacre in Houla was "an appalling crime, and the (U.N.) Security Council has rightly condemned it." Western countries have blamed Assad's forces for the killings, a charge Damascus denies.

"I urge the (Syrian) government to take bold steps to signal that it is serious in its intention to resolve this crisis peacefully, and for everyone involved to help create the right context for a credible political process," Annan told reporters on his arrival in Damascus.?

Shaam News Network / Reuters

A resident of Houla shows a body to a UN observer as they stand near the bodies of people whom anti-government protesters say were killed by government security forces on Friday.

"It's right, as Sergey Lavrov has just done, to call on all parties to cease violence, and we are not arguing that all violence in Syria is the responsibility of the Assad regime, although it has the primary responsibility for such violence," Hague said.?

Lavrov added that "we don't support the Syrian government, we support Kofi Annan's plan."?

The Russian envoy called for everyone in the international community to exert more pressure on both sides to implement Annan's plan, saying it was not clear from talks with opposition members that they were getting the message that the plan had full international support.

He said talk about the need for Assad to step down cast doubt on the West's commitment to the Annan plan and encouraged the opposition to keep up the fight.?

Hague, however, confirmed that Britain still believes Assad should stand aside.?

"But the important thing is that the Annan plan is pursued in whatever way it can be pursued," he said. "The alternatives are the Annan plan or ever-increasing chaos in Syria, and a descent closer and closer to all-out civil war and collapse."?

'Boiling point': On Lebanon's Syria Street, a civil war brews

China on Monday also condemned the killings of civilians in Houla and called for an end to the violence, but gave no indication it was rethinking its strategy toward the fighting in Syria.?

NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports from war-torn Homs showing how parts of the city have been ravaged by fighting while others spared.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin said that Beijing fully supports Annan's mediation efforts and the UN monitors.?

The protests against Assad began in March 2011 and turned into an uprising after his government responded with a violent crackdown on dissent. The U.N. estimated that at least 9,000 people were killed in the first year of the conflict, but hundreds more have been killed since then.?

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.?

shelton - How Estate Planning Is Like Baking | Cooper, Adel ...

?

Issue One of the Domestic Estate Planning Series by Melissa Reynard

?

Ok, so some of you may be wondering how on earth frosting a bunch of cupcakes is anything at all like Estate Planning.? And some of you would be right, there are some differences, but there are a lot of similarities as well.

?

Estate Planning, like Baking, involves multiple ingredients, no person?s ?recipe? is the same, and it?s often wise to refer to your cookbook?..er??I mean Elder Law Specialist when attempting anything complicated or for that matter easy.? After all, have you ever put that wonderful looking cake batter in the oven, only to have it fall as soon as it comes out?? Do you lament the wide cracks that appear in your bread? ? These issues are small when faced with the perils of not planning your estate and throwing ?ingredients? every which way, hoping for the best.

?

So let?s talk about ingredients.? When most people think of estate planning, they think of a will, maybe a trust, and not a whole lot else.? Sure, there are wills, and trusts, but you should also plan for other things, like Healthcare decisions and Powers of Attorney.? ? How could a catastrophic illness like a stroke play into your plan?? Your bank accounts, IRA?s, Insurance, and other policies likewise all have a place in your estate planning. ?

?

Each person is going to need different things from their estate planning as well.? There is no one size fits all to these types of things.? Some may have property and farmland they want to consider while other people live in an apartment but have invested heavily their whole lives.? Incomes are different, assets are different;? and as you well know, that recipe for the brownies you got at that party, tastes nothing like your last batch of brownies you made from another recipe.

?

So who?s to help you with your estate planning?? An Elder Law Specialist.? Just like a baker has their trusty cookbook, an Elder Law Specialist specializes in just that, estate planning!? They can help you develop a will or trust, advise on important documents, and give ideas for your financial accounts.? The offices of Cooper, Adel and Associates offer seminars to give you a better idea on what we can do for you, and while it may not be as fun as a cooking class, it?s definitely just as informative.

Nano vacuum tubes could give a second life to the guitarist's best friend

Nano vacuum tubes could give a second life to the guitarist's best friend

Pretty much the only place you see vacuum tubes any more is inside a quality audio amp. But, once upon a time, they were the primary ingredient in any piece of electronic equipment, including computers. The glass tubes have since been replaced with the smaller, less fragile and cheaper to manufacture silicon transistor. There are, however, disadvantages, to transistors. For one, electrons tend to move more slowly though the semiconductors, and two, they're highly susceptible to radiation. The second of those problems doesn't affect us much here on Earth, but for NASA it poses a major obstacle. Engineers have finally managed to combine the advantages of both vacuum tubes and silicon transistors, though, in what has been dubbed "nano vacuum tubes." They're created by etching tiny cavities in phosphorous-doped silicon, bordered on three sides by electrodes that form the gate, source and drain. The term "vacuum tube" is slightly misleading however, since there is no true vacuum in play. Instead, the source and drain are separated by just 150 nanometers, making it highly unlikely that flowing electrons would run into stray atoms. In addition to their space-worthy hardiness, they can also potentially operate at frequencies ten-times as higher than silicon transistors, making them a candidate to push terahertz tech from experimental to mainstream. For more, check out the source link.

Liberals put the squeeze to Justice Roberts - Washington Post

Justice Anthony Kennedy is generally considered today?s swing vote, but his acerbic first question to the administration?s lawyer during the second day of oral argument changed assumptions: ?Can you create commerce in order to regulate it??

Concluding that Kennedy might be disposed to overturn the mandate, some Obamacare defenders decided that Roberts?s vote will be decisive. They hope to secure it by causing Roberts to worry about his reputation and that of his institution.

Recently, for example, Vermont?s Pat Leahy, chairman of the Judiciary Committee, delivered a Senate speech defending the constitutionality of what he calls the ?personal responsibility requirement.? (This is his Orwellian appellation for the mandate, whereby government coercion nullifies personal choice regarding insurance.) After 37 years in the Senate, Leahy probably no longer knows when he sounds insufferably patronizing, as he did when he said that during oral argument he thought that Roberts ?seemed well aware of the significance of [the Obamacare] decision.? And ?I thought I saw a chief justice who understands the importance of this case to all Americans.? And Roberts ?seemed to understand? the deference owed to Congress.

Leahy intimated that overturning Obamacare would be as momentous, as divisive of the nation and as damaging to the court as was Bush v. Gore, which he asserts ?shook the confidence of the American people in the Supreme Court.? But surely a striking fact about that decision is how equably Americans accepted it. This testified to the court?s durable prestige, which is a function of the court?s immunity to pressures from politicians. Public approval of the court is above 50 percent, that of Congress below 20 percent.

Leahy unsubtly intimated that to avoid ?another 5-4 decision? Roberts should emulate ?the leadership that Chief Justice Warren provided in the unanimous decision in Brown v. Board of Education.? It is, however, passing strange to compare the Obamacare case with Brown, implying that a less-than-unanimous decision would be dangerous.

The school desegregation case overturned the social order of an entire region and accelerated the transformation of the nation?s cultural norms. Obamacare is just an unpopular law enacted by grotesque logrolling (securing three Democratic senators? votes with the ?Louisiana Purchase,? the ?Gator-aid? and the ?Cornhusker Kickback?). Furthermore, Obamacare passed because grossly corrupt conduct by Justice Department prosecutors in the trial of Republican Sen. Ted Stevens of Alaska had cost him reelection.

Leahy tutored Roberts about ?appropriate deference? to ?the elected branch,? vacuously admonished him to be ?a chief justice for all of us? and absurdly asserted that the mandate is ?consistent with the understanding of the Constitution? that ?the American people have had for the better part of a century.?Jeffrey Rosen of George Washington Law School, writing in the New Republic, topped Leahy?s rhetorical extravagance by saying this is Roberts?s ?moment of truth? because, if the court overturns Obamacare 5 to 4, Roberts?s ?stated goal of presiding over a less divisive court will be viewed as an irredeemable failure.?

Oh? Viewed by whom? Perhaps by people who consider it ?ideological? and somehow reprehensible that in the last full term, Justices Roberts and Sam Alito voted together 96 percent of the time, but who consider it principled and admirable that Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan voted together 94 percent of the time. Like-minded justices agree. So?

Why, exactly, would it be less ?divisive? for the court to uphold the broadly disliked Obamacare 5 to 4 than to overturn it 5 to 4? But whether Obamacare is liked or detested is entirely irrelevant. The public?s durable deference toward the Supreme Court derives from the public?s recognition that the court is deferential not to Congress but to the Constitution.

Concerning which, it is cheeky of Rosen, a liberal, to lecture Roberts about jurisprudential conservatism, which Rosen says requires ?restraint,? meaning deference to congressional liberalism. Such clumsy attempts to bend the chief justice are apt to reveal his spine of steel.

Roofing Materials Help Make Toronto Properties A Lot More ...

Above other architectural parts, the roofing can determine the type of your property, including the time it will remain and how critically it is being managed. Being the topmost element, the roofing is the most apparent part of your property, which makes it reign over the outside structure by being promptly apparent from a range.

However, there are a variety of advantages and issues of being the uppermost element of a home. Because it covers the uppermost section of a structure, it works as a protection against the weather, but its inaccessibility causes it to be least attended or serviced. The latter is a result of its visibility, or non-visibility, while it is certainly among the most important elements of the home.

The roof is vitally important that a small deterioration can affect the whole home in numerous ways. Consequently, its right servicing should be one of the top concerns of a homeowner. Since roofs tend to be challenging to enter without using a extended step ladder, the owner must take added efforts during roofing examination and upkeep.

In Canada, specifically in an urban environment like Toronto, there are several kinds of houses. While the predominant climates decide on the sort of roof materials used in the city, the architecture may take priority as the reasons for selection. A southern colonial home would look awful with cedar shakes roof, while metal roofs may not be right for a old-fashioned develop house.

Like in various parts of the country, asphalt shingles are the most typical roofing materials in Toronto. Not only cheap, they can also be designed to practically any house architecture and are easy to put up. This is one good reason almost all homeowners choose asphalt shingles for assembly by roofing contractors in Toronto.

A roofing company Toronto based contractor also presents other sorts of roofing materials to homeowners similar to concrete tile roofing. Ceramic tile is among the most versatile materials because it can be made to look like slate, shake, or terra-cotta tiles. This roof material is also very durable and can last lengthier than most of the other materials available in the market.

While there are many roofing materials which can suit your home style, you may not need to change your home's roof at once. It is best to first seek the services of experts on roofing repair Toronto contractors provide to help you decide its condition-only when this has been done should you make your selection. Whatever roofing material fits your budget and preference, you can depend on expert trades-people to help you decide on effectively. Thomas House shelter celebrates anniversary with expansion ...

GARDEN GROVE ? Thomas House Temporary Shelter celebrated its 25th anniversary with an open house and a plan to house more families.

The shelter is going to buy another apartment building to house families until they get back on their feet financially, officials announced. The program now has 18 apartments in Garden Grove housing 15 families. Two apartments are used for services and a resident manager.

Antonio Rodriguez, 3, front, and his brother Angel, 7, view the Thomas House Temporary Shelter 25-year celebration below. Thomas House Temporary Shelter purchased two apartment units in Garden Grove and use them to assist homeless families and their children. About 95 percent of the homeless families that go through Thomas House do not go back to a shelter.

LEONARD ORTIZ, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

Thomas House was founded in 1987 and has helped more than 3,300 people and more than 1,000 families, officials say. About 95 percent of families that go through the program do not return to a shelter.

The open house was held Thursday night, with Thomas House opening the apartments to the public for the first time. Guests included Garden Grove Mayor Dalton, a representative for O.C. Supervisor Janet Nguyen, and Sister Kathy, former executive director of Thomas House for 18 years.

Families that stay with Thomas House for the six to nine months learn about parenting, budgeting and nutrition. Thomas House also provides employment and family counseling, and children's programs.

Tyson and Saira Carlone and their children ages 18 months, 4, and 6, have been living at Thomas House since March and have recently both found jobs. Tyson Carlone had been laid off from his job in November, and his wife had been a stay-at-home mom. The Carlones found Thomas House by calling information while staying at an emergency shelter.

Saira Carlone says the budgeting classes have been extremely useful.

"I feel like (Thomas House) has given me my self confidence back. My biggest weakness is budgeting, finances and all," she said. "Sitting down with them every month going over that has helped us."

Former Thomas House residents Doug and Kathleen Stanley are in the process of buying a house in Stanton. Doug Stanley found a job through the program and his wife is working toward her high school diploma with hopes to become a nursing assistant.

The couple and their children ages 6, 9, and 15, had been living at Doug Stanley's parents house before moving to Thomas House.

Budgeting was new to the Stanleys as well. Before Thomas House, the family would buy new things without considering whether they had the funds, Doug Stanley said.

"We are accounting for every penny that comes into the house," he said. "If you're not paying attention you don't know what you have and what you've spent."

The children got homework help from Thomas House. The family organized a movie night to get to know the neighbors, and though they've moved out of the program, the movie night continues. The Stanleys bring their projector to the apartments and set up family-friendly films.

The support of staff members and other residents has helped Saira Carlone.

"I have had times where I lose hope and wonder if we will ever get through this. It beats you down," she said. "They see potential in us. That's very uplifting."

Wacky! Human-powered, kinetic craft hit the road

Tina Kerrigan Photography

"Time Machine," built and operated by the Tempus Fugitives team, was last year's Grand Champion in the Kinetic Grand Championship in Humboldt County, Calif.

By Rob Lovitt, msnbc.com contributor

As millions of Americans prepare to hit the road this holiday weekend, some intrepid souls are taking a decidedly different tack. From Arcata, Calif., to Key West, Fla., they?re building unique vehicles, racing them over hill and dale (and bay) and celebrating the joy of human-powered travel.

Along the way, those celebrations may earn the highly coveted honor of being named Overhead Bin?s Weird Festival of the Month for May.

Consider, for example, the Kinetic Grand Championship in Humboldt County, Calif. Now in its 44th year, the three-day ?Triathlon of the Art World? (May 26?28) invites teams to build human-powered ?kinetic sculptures? and race them over 42 miles of roads, beaches and the waters of Humboldt Bay.

?We?re a unique little pocket of the world,? said Emma Breacain of Kinetic Universe, which organizes the event. ?We have a lot of tolerance for quirks.?

According to Breacain, the quirk in question ? transforming old bicycles and other ?junk? into moveable works of art and racing them ? dates back to 1969 when Hobart Brown, a local artist and gallery owner, added two wheels and other repurposed materials to his son?s tricycle and called it a ?pentacycle.?

A friend challenged him to a race; several others took up the challenge with their own ?kinetic kontraptions,? and a tradition was born. Expanded over the years, the event now runs from Arcata to Eureka to Ferndale and requires teams to transform their crafts mid-race as they traverse roads, sand dunes and various bodies of water.

?I can?t tell you how many iPods there must be on the bottom of Humboldt Bay,? said Breacain. Presumably, the owners of those music players were contenders for several awards, including best flip and biggest splash, but also-rans for others, such as fastest and best engineering.

The festivities, which draw approximately 50 teams and 5,000 to 10,000 spectators, have proven so popular that they?ve spawned similar events across the country. Earlier this month, Baltimore and Philadelphia held their own kinetic sculpture races, with upcoming events scheduled in Corvallis and Klamath Falls, Ore., in July.

In the meantime, a different sort of creative competition ? or is that competitive creativity? ? will be on display this weekend across the continent in Key West, Fla. On Sunday, May 27, intrepid boatbuilder/sailors will take to the waters of Key West Bight in the 21st Annual Schooner Wharf Minimal Regatta.

How minimal? The materials entrants can use to build their boats, including paddles, are limited to one sheet of 4? x 8? plywood, two eight-foot 2 x 4s, one pound of fasteners and a roll of duct tape. No caulk or adhesive is allowed although painting of the hull ? the bolder, the better ? is encouraged.

According to Evalena Worthington, co-owner of regatta-sponsor Schooner Wharf Bar, boats compete in one of two categories: canoe/kayaks built for speed and ?open design? models that open the door to all manner of watercraft with wild paint jobs and names we can?t print here.

The event typically draws 40 to 45 entrants and as many as 3,000 spectators, with prizes awarded for speed, design, costumes, sportsmanship and the crowd-pleasing Sinker Award. ?There?s a lot of competition for that one,? said Worthington.

Subpar seamanship aside, the event also has a more serious side, with the proceeds from this year?s entry fees helping support a ?Wounded Warrior? cruise for injured veterans sponsored the 46th Special Forces Company Association.

?Entrants get T-shirts and beer and they get to feel good about the money going to a good cause,? said Worthington. ?It?s Memorial Day weekend so it?s especially fitting.?
