GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, Cuba (AP) ? The Guantanamo Bay prisoner charged with orchestrating the attack on the Navy destroyer USS Cole denounced his treatment at the hands of the U.S. military, telling the judge in his case on Wednesday that he is subjected to painful and unnecessary security measures.
Defendant Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri said he may boycott future sessions of his war crimes tribunal if the military continues to use security measures such as belly chains while moving him around the prison at the U.S. base in Cuba.
"If the guards do not treat me better I have the right not to come and let the world know that the judge sentenced me to death because I did not show up to court due to chains," the defendant, standing and gesturing as he spoke, told the judge.
Al-Nashiri, allegedly a senior member of al-Qaida, faces charges that include terrorism and murder for allegedly orchestrating the 2000 bombing of the Cole, an attack that killed 17 crew members and wounded 37, as well as plots against two other ships. He could get the death penalty if convicted at a trial that is likely more than a year away.
The 47-year-old al-Nashiri, born in Saudi Arabia to a Yemeni father and Saudi mother, was held by the CIA for about four years before he was taken to Guantanamo in September 2006. His lawyers say his treatment prior to being sent to the U.S. base in Cuba was so harsh that they believe it may have caused post-traumatic stress disorder.
Attorney Richard Kammen said al-Nashiri's treatment at Guantanamo may be worsening his condition and has asked for a medical examination by doctors experienced in treating torture victims. Prosecutors say there is no evidence that security measures are harming the defendant, and the U.S. military denies mistreating prisoners at the base.
Al-Nashiri, speaking through an Arabic translator, did not provide many details about how he is treated in Guantanamo, where he is held in the ultra-high-security section known as Camp 7. He said that he gets sick and vomits when being transported from his cell in court and that the chains and chair in which he has to sit during court sessions aggravate his "bad back" and his "nerves." His chief complaint was the belly chains, which he insisted are unnecessary.
"I hope that the judge can explain to these guards and the people in charge to stop those aggressions," he said, making his most extensive remarks in public. "I call them aggressions because they have nothing to do with security."
His pretrial hearing took place as Guantanamo was pelted by a steady rain from the outer bands of the approaching Hurricane Sandy. Warning sirens wailed and officials warned people on the base, which has a population of about 5,500, to begin preparing for the storm. Nearly all of the 166 prisoners are housed in solid-wall structures that are designed to withstand hurricanes and those who aren't will be moved there, said Navy Capt. Robert Durand, a spokesman.
Al-Nashiri, who was clean-shaven and wore a suit jacket over a white tunic, said he did not attend Tuesday's pretrial motions session in protest of the chains. The judge required him to show up Wednesday to answer questions on the record about his decision not to attend at the request of prosecutors, who wanted to ensure that he was voluntarily skipping the hearing and that his absence would not create any later grounds for appeal.
The hearing to address more than 20 motions was scheduled to run through Thursday, but the court was trying to condense the agenda and finish early because of the approaching hurricane.
Al-Nashiri chose to remain in court after his brief speech as the court turned to other matters, including defense requests for additional evidence and expert witnesses. Among them was a defense request for more information from the government on an alleged senior al-Qaida figure killed in a November 2002 U.S. drone strike in Yemen who was identified by media at the time as a "mastermind" of the Cole bombing. The judge, Army Col. James Pohl, did not issue an immediate ruling on the motion.
Pohl also put off ruling on a defense motion to dismiss the charges on the grounds that the U.S. had not declared war at the time of the Cole bombing and therefore al-Nashiri should not be prosecuted in the special tribunal for war-time offenses known as the military commission.
Prosecutors responded that it would be up to the jurors in his eventual trial to determine whether his crimes meet the standard of war crimes under the 2009 law authorizing military commissions, and the judge said he would rule later on the question before he adjourned the session for the day.

Sanofi sees relief from patent loss pain
PARIS (Reuters) - French drugmaker Sanofi forecast 2012 earnings would fall less than expected as cost cuts and demand for diabetes and rare disease drugs cushion the blow from patent expiries.
Sanofi said on Thursday full-year earnings could fall 12 percent, compared with its previous guidance for a decline of up to 15 percent, helped also by demand from emerging markets.
"We are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel," chief executive Chris Viehbacher told reporters after third-quarter income dropped less than expected.
"As our growth platforms continue to build steam, we believe this will put Sanofi back on a growth trajectory," he added.
Sanofi has seen sales of blockbusters such as blood clot preventer Plavix nearly wiped out by the loss of patent protection. Plavix was the world's second-biggest-selling medicine until its U.S. patent lapsed in May.
It expects to return to growth from next year thanks to emerging markets, diabetes, vaccines, animal health, biotech drugs and new products such bowel cancer drug Zaltrap and multiple sclerosis pill Aubagio.
Sanofi's better than expected third quarter and improved guidance contrast with bleak quarterly earnings from European rivals, which are also facing headwinds from a wave of patent expiries sweeping through the global pharmaceutical industry.
Switzerland's Novartis reported lower-than-expected third-quarter sales on Thursday, dragged down by a patent loss on top-selling blood pressure drug Diovan and lower sales at its generics unit.
Sales at AstraZeneca slumped by a bigger-than-expected 19 percent in the third quarter.
"Sanofi should be capable of returning to very consistent revenue and EPS growth over the long-term, which makes it unique among its peers," said Bernstein analyst Tim Anderson.
DOUBLE-DIGIT GROWTH
In the three months to September 30, Sanofi's business net income, which excludes items such as amortization and legal costs, fell 7.4 percent to 2.22 billion euros ($2.9 billion), beating the average forecast of 1.97 billion in a Reuters poll.
Double-digit percentage growth in diabetes treatment Lantus and rare disease unit Genzyme as well as the weaker euro lifted sales to 9.04 billion, up 3.3 percent, offsetting the slump in Plavix and cancer treatment Eloxatin due to generic competition.
Sales in emerging markets, one area Sanofi is betting on for future growth, provided a cushion to the overall results, though they grew slower than in the previous quarter - up 6.8 percent compared with 9.8 percent in the second quarter - due to a lower contribution from Asia and Latin America.
Sanofi shares were up 1.9 percent at 67.35 euros by 0815 GMT, outperforming France's benchmark CAC 40 index.
The shares have risen around 17 percent since the start of 2012, giving the company a market capitalization of over 87 billion euros, close to toppling its former parent, oil company Total, as the largest company on the CAC 40.

Linking up to a site that sells knitting supplies would be helpful to your visitors, and the chances of the knitting supply site wanting to link up to your site are also greater. By linking to a related site that will be relevant to your website?s traffic, you are increasing both of your site?s business prospects ? and both of your sites? link popularity.
Not all sites want to link to other sites, so you will have to do some research when you are looking for possible linking partners. Google is an excellent starting place for your search. Make sure you enter keywords that you think quality customers will also enter to find your own site.
Remember, your criteria are quality, highly ranked, non-competing websites that have a links or resources page.
Go to these sites and objectively assess them. Look at the quality of the product, the graphics, and the ease of use. Then check out the other sites they are linked to, and determine if your own site would fit in with the crowd.
When you decide you have found a good prospect, you must set out to woo them. The first thing to do is to add a link on your own links page to their site. This is an essential first step; it shows good faith, and ups your chances significantly of their reciprocity. After you have added their link, you must contact the webmaster of their site. Give it about a month, and if no link appears, try another charming email. Then give it another month, and if your site is still absent from their links page, it?s time to remove their link from your own links page. The only time you want to pursue a link further than this is if you believe a site is crucial to your link popularity and your business needs. Just remember to keep all your communications complimentary and cordial.
Then set up a schedule to check your ranking in search engines frequently to see if your link popularity has improved. This is not achievable in the blink of an eye. It will take some time and a good deal of work. There is no way around the labor-intensive quality of improving your link popularity, which is why search engines regard it with such importance.

Genome analysis of pancreas tumors reveals new pathway
ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? The latest genomic analysis of pancreatic tumors identified two new pathways involved in the disease, information that could be capitalized on to develop new and earlier diagnostic tests for the disease, said a Baylor College of Medicine physician-scientist who was part of the local team that took part in the international effort. A report appears online in the journal Nature.
"We now know every gene involved in pancreatic cancer," said Dr. William Fisher, professor of surgery and director of the Elkins Pancreas Center at BCM. "This study ushers in a whole new era of taking care of patients with pancreatic cancer. We will look back on this as a turning point in understanding and treating this disease."
Five-year collaboration
The study follows a five-year collaboration between the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery and the Baylor College of Medicine Human Genome Sequencing Center, said Fisher.
The Baylor College of Medicine Human Genome Sequencing Center was one of three sequencing centers worldwide that analyzed the genomes of pancreatic tumors and normal tissues taken from 142 patients with the disease. The BCM center, along with the Australian Pancreatic Center Genome Initiative and the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research Pancreatic Cancer Genome Study carried out detailed studies on 99 of the tumors, identifying 1982 mutations that resulted in a change to a protein and 1,628 significant copy number variations events in which the structure of the chromosomes themselves are changed, either deleting or duplicating genetic information.
The multi-institution, international consortium of researchers discovered mutations in genes involved in chromatin modification (changes that affect the way DNA is packaged inside the cell) and axon guidance (the process by which the axon -- a long threadlike project that carries impulses away from the neuron -- is guided to grow to its proper target).
New information
"This is a category of genes not previously linked to pancreatic cancer," said Fisher. "We are poised to jump on this gene list and do some exciting things."
New information is much welcome in the field of pancreatic cancer, which is the fourth leading cause of cancer death with an overall five-year survival rate of less than 5 percent. The figures have not changed substantially in the past 50 years.
The study is the first to report findings from primary tumors in the disease. Previously only cell lines or tumors transplanted into mice had been used because the tumors are so small. "Therefore it required new techniques to sensitively identify mutations that were important to the development of cancer," said Dr. David Wheeler, associate professor in the BCM Human Genome Sequencing Center who oversees the center's cancer projects. Wheeler and Fisher are also members of the NCI-designated Dan L. Duncan Cancer Center at BCM.
Wheeler pointed out that large, multi-centered studies using well-annotated groups of patients with cancer are pivotal to studies such as this, which promise to guide the way toward developing new treatment strategies.
Other BCM people who took part include Marie-Claude Gingras, Nipun Kakkar, Fengmei Zhao, Yuan Qing Wu, Min Wang, Donna M. Muzny, Sally E.Hodges, Jennifer Drummond, Kyle Chang, Yi Han, Lora Lewis, Huyen Dinh and Christian Buhay, as well as Dr. Richard A. Gibbs, director of the BCM Human Genome Sequencing Center.

- The Galaxy, being opportunistic, weren?t far off with three early shots from long range.? In the 9th minute, Christian Wilhelmsson just missed wide after being put clean through wonderfully by Juninho.
- In the 22nd, Robbie Keane put Edson Buddle through, although Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch handling the situation well, quick off his line to add pressure and blocking Buddle?s effort. So, the Galaxy was easily the most dangerous side over the first 45 minutes, taking 11 of the game?s first 13 shots.

The offense isn?t as diverse or direct without him, but it doesn?t suffer too much in the run of play. Where the side does miss the former England captain is on restarts; his ability to hit those precision? corners and free kicks does, in fact, add something to L.A.?s ability to produce goals.
- San Jose?s central defensive enforcement arm, Victor Bernardez, was every bit as imposing and effective.
- The Earthquakes needed 50 minutes to pose any serious threat to Josh Saunders in the Galaxy goal, and that was on a Gonzalez boo-boo.? The big center back lost focus and allowed a simple ball to bounce past him. Wondolowski pounced and nailed a left-footed shot off the post from 22 yards.
- Immediately after, Mike Magee saved a Wondolowski header off the line, and quickly thereafter came the mother of all goal-mouth scrambles. It really was on the comical side, as the ball spent about 10 seconds in a tangle of bodies more than a couple of feet outside the Galaxy goal.
- The home team?s smart change was moving balls quicker to the outside and trying to attack the flanks, rather than channeling things into Lenhart to start the thrusts.? So it was with the breakthrough goal, as Wilhelmsson pulled defender Ramiro Corrales to the near post while Keane worked the space shrewdly between two defenders in the middle, splitting the distance just right to latch onto Buddle?s cross.

Baltimore Tourism Group Backs Expanded Gambling ? CBS Baltimore

Whether for or against Question 7 on the upcoming ballot, voters are a little more than two weeks away from hitting the polls. Television ads worth millions are overtaking the airwaves. It?s in this time crunch that one group for expanded gambling in the city is backing Question 7.

?Harrah?s and Caesar?s are going to come to town,? said Tom Noonan. ?They?ve got 40 million card-carrying members that they go out and market, they?re going to go out and market Baltimore as a new destination for them, and people will come to town.?
Tom Noonan runs Visit Baltimore, the city?s main tourism arm. He says bigger games mean more visitors to Baltimore and greater job numbers.
?People will come to town and stay in hotel rooms and obviously go gambling and use restaurants. For us, it?s all about growing the tourism industry,? Noonan said.
And where the city is planning to build its new casino makes a big difference, according to Noonan. It?s set to sit right next to M&T Bank Stadium and Oriole Park.
?That?s a great one-two punch together. People are coming 91 nights out of the year for either baseball or football games. They?ll have the opportunity to go right over to the casino and come back,? said Noonan.
That may be a sweet deal for gamblers, but for some voters, a new casino on Russell Street only poses a traffic tie-up.
?Whatever is going on between football and baseball, and you?re going to clutter it up with 3,000 more people a night. It?s just going to be a mess,? said voter Harry Kunze.
If Question 7 is approved by voters, Baltimore?s planned two-story casino would offer more than 3,700 slots to visitors.

This past weekend was our 1st ?A4A Family Day? at the North Shore Wisconsin Athletic Club (WAC). We walked into a ?gym with (5) A4A athletes all close to their parents, some engaged in activities like basketball and playing with swiss medicine balls, and other disengaged, sitting along the walls until it was time to go home.
Insert, Chellie + I?in about (10) minutes there was a maze laid out on the basketball court made with Body Bars, which made all the kids think 2x about wanting to go home. ?Soon enough Henry agreed to leave his parents + drop the volleyball he was pseudo playing with; playing with us instead.

LONDON (AP) -Anton Ferdinand joined older brother Rio in refusing to wear a T-shirt to support an anti-discrimination campaign Sunday, in a perceived protest at the impotence of organizations during recent racism cases in English football.
The younger Ferdinand was at the center of the most high-profile incident in the past year when he was abused by John Terry during a Premier League match last October.
Terry was banned for four matches and fined 220,000 pounds for hurling a racial slur, but many players feel the punishment was too lenient, as with other sanctions related to recent incidents of racism.
Anton Ferdinand was one of a number of players who declined to wear a T-shirt promoting the Kick It Out campaign in the warm-up before Sunday's Premier League match between his Queens Park Rangers team and Everton.
Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand did the same before Saturday's match against Stoke, angering manager Alex Ferguson so much that the center back could face disciplinary action.
"It is embarrassing for me," said Ferguson, who had told members of the press that Ferdinand would not boycott the campaign. "He will be dealt with, no doubt about that."
However, Ferdinand's stance was backed by the chairman of the Professional Footballers' Association, which provides funds for the Kick It Out body.
"We will definitely monitor the situation very closely and make sure Rio Ferdinand's rights as a human being, never mind as a footballer, are not undermined in this position," PFA chairman Clarke Carlisle said.
"Everyone has a right to free speech - just like you can't coerce anyone into shaking hands, you can't make somebody wear a T-shirt - although I do personally believe that joining in with the campaign is the best way forward."
Kick It Out has been raising awareness for issues such as racism since the 1990s and began its latest annual two-week campaign on Thursday.
However, Reading striker Jason Roberts declared he wouldn't be taking an active part in the campaign and many others followed suit on Saturday, including Rio Ferdinand and the entire squads of Wigan and Swansea ahead of their Premier League match at Liberty Stadium.
It has been widely reported that the players are unhappy not just with Kick It Out but also the FA for a lack of action in combating racism in football.
Some believe the players' refusal to wear T-shirts during warm-up routines actually gives more publicity to the anti-racism campaign.
Police, meanwhile, are investigating allegations of racist abuse by a supporter during the northeast derby between Sunderland and Newcastle at the Stadium of Light on Sunday.

Lebanon is seeking to take legal action against the award-winning American television series Homeland for its portrayal of Beirut as a city riven with terrorists.

"I am calling on all young Lebanese adults to do what they need to do; to write blogs, to call the BBC and CNN to try to raise awareness that Beirut is not a city of Kalashnikov and war."
The Homeland episode's title, Beirut is back, appropriates a phrase that has often been used in newspapers in recent years to describe the city's resurgence as a vibrant capital. The New York Times ranks Beirut as a must-see destination and Lonely Planet lists it as one of the 10 greatest comeback cities in the world.
Residents expressed bafflement at the episode's description of modern day "Hamra Street". What in the programme is a shoddy quarter where gunmen leap from cars and harass terrified women is actually a busy commercial centre of top-brand Western clothing chains and boutiques.

Tom Fletcher, the British ambassador to Lebanon, who has campaigned for Westerners to reassess their perception of the country told Executive, the Lebanese magazine that broke the story that "Homeland is one of life's joys, but Lebanon tends to get a rough time from filmmakers ? I'd encourage people to see the real Beirut."

Innovation Excellence | Identifying Improvements ? from Shipyards ...
Often, innovations are considered as a big, breakthrough products that will change the way we live. But, small incremental innovations ? improvements can also be very important, through big savings.
Could organizations be so well organized that there is no place for improvement? Of course not!
So, this is the easiest part in the quest for ideas ? everyone surely have a lot of ideas in how to make the everyday work more efficient, faster or just how to eliminate unnecessary costs or wastes in the work area. So, improvements are possible everywhere, it is just needed to find them.
I?ll take two examples: shipyards and software development.
In the shipyard, an improvement in process of making one ship which can be used in future can save thousands of dollars. Improvements in choosing materials or reducing waste, will save physical resources and time.
In the software development, small change in process can save money through saving time. New self-developed tools or scripts which save time in development or installation of the product are part of many software firms. This kind of ideas often exist and they are realized, but they are not considered as improvements.
In the both cases new ideas can be triggered through workshops which covers overview of the process with defining measures which will result in savings. However, just identifying improvements should make a big boost to the innovative climate in organizations, with making innovation something what is already done in the next room or in the same department.

Evernote for Android gets new offline notebooks, widgets and more
Evernote has already revamped a few of its offerings this month, and it's now brought some changes to its Android app as well. That includes new offline notebooks for premium subscribers that'll let you download multiple notebooks in one shot, a pared down note editor toolbar, retooled Action Bars for Android tablets and a new resizable Grid Widget for your homescreen. Not surprisingly, Evernote also says that the update includes a slew of other fixes and tweaks that promise to make the app "faster and more reliable," and it's promising that there's still "lots more to come." You can find the updated app in the Google Play store at the link below.

Jobless rate falls in most battleground states
CLEVELAND (AP) ? Unemployment rates fell last month in nearly all of the battleground states that will determine the presidential winner, giving President Barack Obama fresh fodder to argue that voters should stick with him in an election focused squarely on the economy.
The declines, however, were modest. It's unknown whether they will do much to sway undecided voters who are considering whether to back Republican Mitt Romney or give the Democratic president four more years.
The statewide data released by the Labor Department on Friday provide one of the last comprehensive looks at the health of the U.S. economy ahead of Election Day, now a little more than two weeks away. Voters will get one more update on the national unemployment rate just days before the election. But the state reports matter greatly to the Obama and Romney campaigns, which believe the public's impressions of the economy are shaped mostly by local conditions rather than national ones.
In Ohio, perhaps the most crucial battleground state for both Obama and Romney, the unemployment rate ticked down last month to 7 percent from 7.2 percent, below the national average of 7.8 percent.
"I knew a lot of people who were laid off and now they're working," said firefighter Matt Sparling, an Obama supporter from Parma Heights, Ohio. "So something good is happening here."
Obama's team is banking on the president getting credit for improvements in Ohio's economy, particularly for the bailout of the auto industry, which has deep roots in the Midwestern swing state. But Romney has opportunities to run on the economy in Ohio, too. The state actually lost nearly 13,000 jobs in September and the drop in the unemployment rate was probably due in part to people dropping out of the job market.
Obama's campaign released a new ad in Ohio on Friday, touting the president's rescue of General Motors and Chrysler. Without the auto bailout, one man in the ad says, "Ohio would have collapsed." Another man says, "Mitt Romney would have just let us go under ? just let them go bankrupt." The ad's tagline shows the map of Ohio with the words: "Mitt Romney. Not one of us."
The president didn't mention the state jobless numbers during a campaign stop Friday in Virginia, one of two battleground states where the rate didn't drop. It held steady at the relatively low level of 5.9 percent.
Spirited on other topics, Obama quipped in a raucous rally at George Mason University that a case of "Romnesia" was preventing his opponent from remembering his own stances on health care, energy and a slate of policies.
"He's forgetting what his own positions are ? and he's betting that you will, too," Obama said. "We've got to name this condition that he's going through. I think it's called Romnesia."
Romney was headlining a rally in Florida Friday evening after spending much of the day in New York meeting with advisers.
The candidates were stepping off the campaign trail this weekend for debate preparations ahead of Monday's third and final face-off in Boca Raton, Fla. Romney was staying in South Florida to practice, while Obama and top aides headed to Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland, to prepare for the foreign policy-focused debate.
International issues competed with the economy for voters' attention Friday, as fresh questions arose over what the White House knew when about the deadly attack on Americans in Libya.
Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan accused Obama of stonewalling, telling Milwaukee radio station WTMJ that the president was refusing to answer even basic questions.
"His response has been inconsistent, it's been misleading," Ryan said.
Romney and Ryan have criticized the administration for saying at first that the attack was a spontaneous mob reaction to an anti-Muslim video on YouTube when they now acknowledge it was a terrorist attack. U.S. officials told The Associated Press that the CIA station chief in Libya reported to Washington within 24 hours of the attack to say there was evidence it was carried out by militants, although it's unclear who received that information right away.
Despite increased focus on Libya, the economy remains the No. 1 election issue for most voters.
Friday's jobs report showed the unemployment rate falling slightly in seven battleground states: Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio and Wisconsin. Rates held steady at 5.7 percent in New Hampshire and 5.9 percent in Virginia. Unemployment in both states has long been well below the national average.
Nevada's 11.8 percent rate is the highest nationally. Iowa has the lowest battleground state rate, with 5.2 percent out of work.
Obama has staked his re-election prospects on the notion that the economic crisis he inherited is easing. He's been backed by positive trends for a handful of recent economic indicators, as well as polls showing the public's view of the economy is improving.
But millions of Americans are still out of work, giving Romney an opportunity to cast the president as ineffective in solving the country's economic troubles. Romney, too, has plenty of economic data to back up his argument, including disappointing earnings reports Friday from major companies, including Microsoft and McDonald's.
Both campaigns say the last round of data released ahead of Election Day is unlikely to sway voters who have been living the reality of the economic downturn and weak recovery for more than four years.
John Patterson, 25, a recent college graduate from North Carolina, said he doesn't have to look at unemployment numbers to know things aren't good in his home state. He's sent out resumes and had a few interviews but is still unemployed.
Patterson voted for Obama four years ago, but says he's not sure he'll do the same this time around.
"Things haven't really changed, have they?" he said. "I mean, too many people are still out of work."
Back in Ohio, Diana Huddleston said the falling unemployment rate has done little to help her personal economic situation. Her husband lost his jobs a few years back when an aluminum producer in the region cut back. He eventually found work as a dishwasher, Huddleston said, but that position comes with much lower pay.
Huddleston says she doesn't plan to vote in the presidential election because "nothing is going to change here."
