An Orlando City Youth Soccer Club coach was arrested last week on a warrant stemming from a theft 1,100 miles away in Des Plaines, Ill.
Robert Smith, 44, served on the coaching staff for the boys U11 soccer team from September until his arrest on Feb. 13, Teresa Tatlonghari, spokeswoman for the soccer club, said Wednesday.
She added that Smith passed a background check before he was given his position and that he was suspended and parents were notified of the arrest immediately.
"We really do hold the safety of the children to the highest regard," Tatlonghari said.
Police issued the warrant for Smith's arrest in January related to the theft of $20,000 in property from a Des Plaines banquet hall a year ago.
He was arrested in his Orange County home and is being held in the Orange County Jail without bond as he awaits extradition to the Cook County Jail in Illinois. Information specifying what was stolen from the banquet hall was not available Wednesday afternoon.
