Nvidia: Next-Generation Mobile Chips to Outperform Current ...

Back in the days, both Microsoft Corp.?s Xbox 360 as well as Sony Corp.?s PlayStation 3 offered remarkable performance and impressive capabilities. Nowadays, both consoles cannot be compared to even entry-level gaming PCs. Moreover, the forthcoming generations of chips for mobile devices will actually leave the consoles behind both in terms of raw compute performance as well as in terms of capabilities.

?The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 are barely more powerful than mobile devices... The next click of mobile phones will outperform [them],? said Tony Tamasi, senior vice president of content and technology at Nvidia, in a conversation with Bit-Tech web-site.

The high-ranking executive for Nvidia did not reveal which mobile chip will outperform the PS3 and X360, but it is logical to expect that the next-gen Tegra 5 code-named Logan with Kepler-architecture graphics core and new ARM Cortex general-purpose cores will offer performance akin to the current-gen game consoles.?

Keeping in mind that Microsoft released Xbox 360 back in 2005, whereas Sony unveiled the PlayStation 3 back in 2006, they both are outdated these days. Without any surprises at some point in future system-on-chips for mobile devices will outperform both dedicated video game consoles.

What remains to be seen is whether mobile software developers will actually be able to take full advantage of SoC?s for portable devices and deliver games for smartphones and tablets akin to those on PS3 and X360. Given that end-users utilize mobile gadgets in a different way than game consoles (e.g., play for minutes rather for hours), improved raw compute performance not necessarily will result in top-notch games. Still, without any doubts the future mobile titles will look and feel better than the current games.
