Within the last two years, Wahoo?s has about one-third of the 100 franchise locations secured. Current expansion into different demographic marketplaces is changing how Wahoo?s has traditionally been recognized as a restaurant designed for beach towns and recreational resorts.

Wahoo?s Fish Taco built its name, brand awareness and customer loyalty on its enthusiasm for extreme sports and is known for its specialty charbroiled fish, steak and chicken tacos and immense in flavor and size burritos. Wahoo?s Fish Taco was founded in 1988 by three brothers, Wing, Ed and Mingo, who together combined their love of surf and food to create a restaurant with an eclectic Mexican/Brazilian/Asian menu and a Hawaiian North Shore vibe. The first location opened in Costa Mesa, California.

Wing, Ed and Mingo grew up in San Paolo, Brazil, where they spent their adolescent years above their parents? Chinese restaurant. Each day after school, the brothers worked in the restaurant peeling shrimp or washing dishes. In 1975, the family moved to Orange County, California, where their dad opened the famous Shanghai Pine Garden Chinese restaurant on Balboa Island, frequented by locals and celebrities alike.

The brothers grew up in the restaurant and on the beaches. Addicted to surfing, they would travel south to Mexico to surf, and it was in Mexico that they were first introduced to what would become their signature menu item: the fish taco. Years of surfing trips created a craving for the specialty of charbroiled fish, salsa and tortillas.

In 1988, when the brothers decided to import the fish taco to Southern California, they gave it a unique twist. They combined the fish taco with their Brazilian favorites and Asian-inspired items. The original restaurant was decorated with donations of local surf companies, further fueling the development of a loyal and steady following of locals. Some customers began visiting daily, and servers gained a familiarity with their orders, lending to the friendly atmosphere.

In 1990, Steve Karfaridis joined as a partner and served as a catalyst for expansion into Laguna Beach and Huntington Beach.

British Supermarket behemoth Tesco has snapped up WE7, a streaming music service co-founded by Peter Gabriel that offers personalized radio stations to users for £10.8 million ($16.7 million). The UK's biggest supermarket has purchased 91 percent of the company, with the remaining stake set to be transferred over shortly. It looks like the chain will use WE7's infrastructure and resources as the spine for a beefier music service as British supermarkets look to diversify into the entertainment market following its purchase of Blinkbox last year.

AP Interview: Detroit mayor frustrated over delays

Detroit Mayor Dave Bing lashed out Thursday against "people with personal agendas" he blames for stalling his efforts to pull the city from the brink of financial collapse - a rare expression of public frustration from a man who seldom lost his cool, even as a professional basketball player.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Bing said it was time to finally move toward solving the city's budget problems after a judge dismissed a lawsuit he feared could have caused the city to go broke.

"I didn't come here because I needed the job or I needed income," the 68-year-old mayor said from his office in City Hall. "I came here for one reason and one reason only: to help fix a broken city. And when I see people with their personal agendas superseding what our own people need here, that's what pisses me off."

Bing didn't mention anybody by name but acknowledged frustration after failing to get Corporation Counsel Krystal Crittendon, the city's top lawyer, to drop the legal complaint. Earlier this week, the judge dismissed her lawsuit against the so-called consent agreement that gave the state a more active role in Detroit's financial restructuring.

Before that action in court, Detroit's nine-member City Council also refused the mayor's request to join him in asking Crittendon to drop the lawsuit - even at the risk of the state withholding millions of dollars in revenue sharing money from Detroit.

Bing is running things at arguably the lowest point in the city's history. When elected in May 2009, he inherited a city with budget deficit topping $300 million and dysfunctional systems incapable of improving things.

Under the deal he signed in April with Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder, state officials will have some oversight over Detroit's financial situation without the embarrassment of appointing an overseer to run things.

The budget deficit has been reduced, making Detroit's once muddy fiscal picture a little clearer. But the inability to control his own lawyer and rally the city's legislative body behind him called into question whether he is in control or has yet mastered the political leadership required to move Detroit forward.

Any debate along those lines were answered Wednesday when an Ingham County judge sided with Bing's contention that Crittendon's lawsuit should have been filed with the mayor's blessings, Bing said.

"He made it very clear who the leader was," Bing said. "And I'm the only one."

He added that most members of the City Council "kind of waffled" on the issue.

Bing was a Hall of Fame guard for 12 years in the 1960s and 1970s with the Detroit Pistons, Washington Bullets and Boston Celtics. If the city's financial woes were a basketball game, he said, it would be a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter. His objective is to "score," he said, because he doesn't think the job would get done if he passed it to someone outside the administration.

"I have more confidence in me than I have in those others," he said. "Too much politics."

Bing has brought stability to an office shamed by the shenanigans, extramarital affairs and arrest of former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. But leadership in fixing the finances still is lacking, Councilman Kwame Kenyatta said.

"The city was spiraling out of control financially. We were not aware of how bad it was as Bing was coming in the door," Kenyatta said. "Could he have done anything about it? It's been three years. You can't keep blaming the other guy."

Progress is coming, Bing said.

With Crittendon's lawsuit dismissed, the state is expected to keep free the revenue sharing payments to help Detroit pay its bills and workers. At the start of the new fiscal year July 1, the city also will start collecting taxes from businesses and residents.

The threat of payless paydays for city workers has passed - at least for now.

"Paying the workers is your number one priority," Bing said. "Without them, nothing gets done."

But vendors and companies that do business with city have are "not getting paid as quickly as they'd like," he added. "We're fortunate to have vendors who have been with us for a long period of time understanding the dire place that we're in, but also have enough confidence in this administration that they are going to get paid."

June 14, 2012 Toronto A new open-access journal dedicated to international perspectives on substance use and addictions research was launched at the annual meeting of the Kettil Bruun Society for Social and Epidemiological Research on Alcohol.

The International Journal of Alcohol and Drug Research (IJADR) (http://ijadr.org), the Society's official peer-reviewed publication, was created with support from Canada's Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) and funding from the U. S. National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).

Although there are other addictions journals, this publication serves several important new functions, notes CAMH Scientist and Editor-in-Chief Dr. Kathryn Graham.

"Access to many journals is often limited for researchers in low-and middle-income countries, as most have costs either for readers or authors," says Dr. Graham. "This journal is free for both readers and researchers, and will increase access to papers of the highest scientific standard on cross-cultural research on substance use."

In a joint editorial with Co-Editor-in-Chief Dr. John C. Clapp of San Diego University, she also notes, "We are particularly interested in papers that examine drug use from an international perspective and that explore how issues related to drug use and the social and health-related consequences of such use impact nations, regions and cultures."

The first issue is based on research presented at a thematic meeting of the Kettil Bruun Society in Uganda. Papers include:

• Global perspectives on alcohol research: Facilitating interdisciplinary and international collaborations to address prevailing challenges.
• Alcohol and the process of economic development: Contributions from ethnographic research
• Socio-economic determinants for alcohol consumption in a Ugandan student population.
• Community-based prevention of alcohol-related injuries: Possibilities and experiences.
• Distress and drinking: Cross-cultural connections and contexts.

The journal's editorial team includes researchers from countries such as South Africa, Uganda, Sweden, the United States, as well as several CAMH scientists. Dr. Jrgen Rehm, Director of CAMH's Social and Epidemiological Research Department, chairs the journal's advisory board.

Another unique feature of the journal is its mentoring and copy editing program to help non-native English researchers refine promising studies deemed to be interesting and relevant.

"The international focus of the International Journal of Alcohol and Drug Research, especially on low- and middle-income countries, is consistent with the mission of CAMH, in which health equity is a corporate value that applies to research as well as clinical and educational services," notes Dr. Graham.

Upcoming special issues, with guest editors, are planned on the topics of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), substance-impaired driving, and substance-related factors and the global burden of disease. Man's microbes help map 'normal' in humans

Charles Rathmann never thought of himself as a model for American manhood, but when it comes to the bugs on his body, he is.

The 40-year-old St. Louis research director is among 242 volunteers whose skin, nose, mouth, gut and other samples have been collected and analyzed to create what scientists are celebrating as the first map of the normal microbial make-up of healthy humans.

?I am an ordinary guy,? Rathmann told msnbc.com. ?But they can use the normal flora on my body to set a baseline.?

Indeed, the release of coordinated research Wednesday from the Human Microbiome Project Consortium organized by the National Institutes of Health promises to revolutionize the study of the microorganisms that inhabit people, experts told reporters.

"This is a whole new way of looking at human biology and human disease," said Dr. Phillip Tarr, a researcher and professor of pediatrics at the Washington University School of Medicine. "It's awe-inspiring and it also offers incredible new opportunities."

Instead of the one-germ, one-disease theory that has governed past thinking, doctors and patients alike will need to consider the entire ecosystem of bacteria at work in the body, much like the ecosystem of a forest in nature.?

"This is going to be a whole new ballgame," Tarr added.?

Scientists are just starting to use the new HMP?data to understand disease, including the role of the gut microbiome in maladies such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, the skin microbiome in psoriasis, and the urogenital microbiome in reproductive and sexual diseases, among many other projects, experts said. It could become crucial in figuring out remedies for serious and potentially deadly C. difficile infections, which are blamed on disruptions in the normal flora of the gut, Tarr said.

Scientific reports being published this week include two in the journal Nature and 12 in journals from the the Public Library of Science or PLoS. The reports represent work from some 200 members of the HMP Consortium from nearly 80 universities and scientific institutions reflecting five years of research, according to the NIH.

For the first time, researchers used sophisticated genome sequencing techniques to find that instead of the few hundred bacterial species previously identified through laborious cultures, there are more than 10,000 microbial species inhabiting the human body.

Microorganisms outnumber human cells 10 to 1 and they make up between 1 percent and 3 percent of the body?s mass, the researchers found. In a 200-pound adult, that means there are between 2 pounds and 6 pounds of bacteria, "a rather remarkable amount," said Dr. Eric D. Green, director of the National Human Genome Research Institute.?

The new data, which will provide a shared database for the scientific community, showed that?people harbor a whole range of microbes, including beneficial bugs and also pathogens known to cause disease.?The microbes in healthy people appear to be much more diverse from site to site than expected, and also from person to person,?researchers found.?In addition,?they were surprised to learn that the specific bacteria at a site are less important than the functions they?perform.?

"It appears that bacteria can pinch-hit for each other," Curtis Huttenhower, a researcher at the Harvard School of Public Health explained in a statement. He was co-lead author of one of the HMP papers published in the journal Nature.?

Information like that is exactly why Rathmann agreed to be scraped, poked and prodded for science.

?I liked the fact that this was going to be a way for them to learn more about these little bacteria that exist invisibly on us,? he said.

Researchers collected a total of 5,298 samples, plucking them?from up to 18 body sites of Rathmann and the other volunteers, including 129 men and 113 women, from Houston and St. Louis.

This gut bug, the bacterium Enterococcus faecalis, is among those analyzed through novel genome sequencing techniques as part of the Human Microbiome Project Consortium coordinated by the National Institutes of Health.

Participants included some of Rathmann?s friends and colleagues, even his ex-wife, in part because Rathmann?s actual job is to round up subjects for clinical trials at the Washington University School of Medicine.

?My group tries to recruit volunteers,? said Rathmann, who is director of the Recruitment Enhancement Core at the WUSM Center for Clinical Studies.

?We get involved any time we see a trial that is interesting. It helps move the medical community forward.?

In this case, Rathmann and the others had to prove they were healthy, undergoing screening tests, blood tests, even dental exams to make sure their microbes weren?t unusual.

?If you had a cavity, you were out,? he said. ?You could take no medicines that would disrupt the flora they were trying to identify.?

The samples were collected over a period of several weeks starting in 2009, when Rathmann and others had to agree to use study-issued shampoos, soaps and toothpastes during the testing period.

The actual collection of the microbes was simple and not painful, Rathmann said. It involved scraping cells from 15 sites in men and 18 sites in women, who had vaginal swabs taken from three places.

?It was the mouth, teeth, back of the throat, inside of the elbow, back of the ear,? Rathmann recalled. ?You also had to give a stool sample on two or three different occasions.?

Researchers took these samples, all from adults ages 18 to 40, then analyzed them using a novel genetic sequencing technique that was able to identify the DNA of bacteria, ignoring the normal human DNA.

Using computers, the scientists sorted 3.5 terabytes of data to get a full picture of the human microbiome, the collection of microorganisms living in the human body.

What they found was riveting, reported the scientists, who figure they?ve now identified between 81 percent and 99 percent of all genera of microorganisms in healthy adults.

One paper published in PLos ONE found that there were certain core bacteria present in 95 percent of all subjects. But even among those core bacteria, there was a wide range among sites -- and among people.?

"Our findings include the fact that humans carry a remarkable range of microbes," said Bruce Birren, director of the Genomic Sequencing Center for Infectious Diseases. "Apparently there are many different ways to be healthy when it comes to our microbes."

Launched in 2007, the HMP has been funded through $153 million from the NIH Common Fund, which invests in high-impact research, and another $20 million from individual NIH institutes and research centers.?

Until today, Rathmann had not seen any of the research associated with his body samples. Participants didn?t receive maps of their individual microbiomes and they have no idea what particular bugs they harbored in various places.

?I definitely will follow the results of this,? said Rathmann, who hopes his example will prompt others to volunteer for clinical trials. ?Our flora will be the benchmark now for what everybody studies.?

Despite being explored for more than a century, Carlsbad Caverns National Park still hides more passages.

A team exploring the park's Lechuguilla Cave, the deepest cave in the continental United States, climbed over 410 feet (125 meters) into a high dome in early May. Upon reaching the top, lead climber James Hunter discovered a maze of previously unknown passages, pits and large rooms. The team named it Oz.

One of the newly discovered pits, dubbed Kansas Twister, is 510 feet (155 m) tall, making it the largest vertical expanse yet discovered in the caverns. It's about half as high as New York City's Chrysler Building or Chicago's Sears Tower. The cavers use laser distance meters to measure the height from the floor to their final rope anchor.

A large room, which they named Munchkin Land, measured 600 feet (183 m) long, 100-150 feet (30-46 m) wide, and 75-150 feet (23-46 m) tall.

Lechuguilla Cave is known worldwide for its large rooms, unusual minerals, massive and fragile cave formations and scientific importance.? This discovery heralds new areas for physical and scientific exploration.

Ten cavers from Colorado, South Dakota, New Mexico, California and Arizona participated in the eight-day underground expedition that made these discoveries.

Since mapping began in 1986, explorers have surveyed more than 134.6 miles (216.6 kilometers) of passages in Lechuguilla Cave. Because of the cave's delicate environment and scientific importance, only about 100 people, most of them vetted explorers and scientists, are permitted to enter each year.

Most of the newly found section of Lechuguilla Cave is in a layer of rock called the Yates Formation, deep red, orange and yellow rock with relatively few stalactites and stalagmites.

The untouched nature of Lechuguilla Cave has been a boon for research. A recent study published in the journal PLoS ONE found that ancient bacteria in the cave possessed a surprising degree of bacterial resistance.

The study, carried out by the Yacht and Superyacht Research Group (YSRG) at Newcastle University, UK, with the Yacht Research Unit of the University of Auckland and the Italian super-computer centre CILEA, looked at how accurately we can predict the way a yacht will behave during a particular race using parameters such as sea conditions and currents.

Modelling the way each factor impacts on the yacht at every stage of the race, the team - led by Newcastle University's Dr Ignazio Maria Viola - has shown that it is possible to use a virtual simulation to steal an advantage over your competitors.

Dr Viola, who over the last ten years has worked with several Olympic Sailing teams and America's Cup teams, explains: "Until now, competition-level sailors would have to carry out physical tests to accurately choose the best boat for that particular race.

"What we have shown is that by simulating the conditions we can predict with the same degree of accuracy as the most reliable of these tests how each boat will behave across the course.

"At the highest competitive level every second counts and using this information, competitors can choose the boat that can potentially win them the race and give them an edge over the rest of the field. Ultimately, however, whether they win or not is down to the sailor and how he or she performs on the day."

The team modelled the resistance on the hull in a range of scenarios, racing virtual crews in state-of-the-art yacht designs, comparing the results with data from model-scale towing tank tests.

The research, published this month in the leading academic journal for yacht engineering, the International Journal of Small Craft Technology (Transactions of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects), shows for the first time that simulation can be used to precisely measure water resistance against a boat's hull.

The new method, developed by Dr Viola, can now be employed by any sailor, yacht designer or researcher to test the performance of a boat under different weather conditions.

Newcastle University Yacht and Superyacht Research Group is the most published and largest research-focussed group in Europe. Currently working with America's Cup sail and yacht designers, the team are world-leaders in the numerical modelling of sailing yachts.

"Virtual races could be the key to helping Britain finally clinch the America's Cup," explains Dr Viola, who has also just completed tests on a new candidate for the 2016 Olympics.

"The America's Cup is the oldest trophy in the world and the most expensive to win with each challenger spending tens of millions of dollars in designing, building, and sailing its boat, which represents the state-of-the-art of the worldwide marine industry.

"First held in 1851 at Cowes, on the Isle of Wight, America held the title for 132 years. Since 1983, however, the Cup has been successively won by Australia, USA, New Zealand and Switzerland, before finally being brought back to the USA in 2010 with the San Francisco Yacht Club's victory of the 33rd America's Cup.

"The race will be won by the team with the most skill but our research shows that we can use virtual sailing to remove other unknowns."
