(AP) ? A Jupiter-bound spacecraft prepared to fire its engine Thursday for an important maneuver intended to bring it back toward Earth.

The engine burn was the first of two planned to set up NASA's Juno spacecraft to use Earth's gravity to accelerate it toward the outer solar system. The second engine firing will occur next week.

Launched last year, Juno is zooming toward an encounter with the giant gas planet in 2016.

More than half a dozen spacecraft have visited the solar system's largest planet since the 1970s, but Juno promises to venture closer for a deeper study into Jupiter's evolution.

By peering through Jupiter's dense clouds and mapping its magnetic and gravity fields, scientists hope to better understand how the solar system formed.

The $1.1 billion mission is managed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Juno is currently about 300 million miles from Earth. Soon after launch, it glanced back and snapped a rare picture of Earth and the moon.

Since the rocket that carried Juno was not powerful enough to boost it directly to its destination, it has to cruise out to space and swing back next year to use the Earth as a slingshot to push it toward Jupiter.

The back-to-back burns were needed to put Juno on course to fly by Earth at an altitude of some 300 miles.

To prepare for Thursday's engine burn, the spacecraft's fuel tanks were pressurized and its batteries were fully charged.

Once in orbit around Jupiter, Juno will circle the poles 33 times and use instruments to track the abundance of water and oxygen in the atmosphere, and determine whether the planet's core is solid or gaseous.

Juno is the first solar-powered spacecraft to venture so far from the sun. It is equipped with three solar panels, each the size of a tractor-trailer.

Juno is designed to study Jupiter for a year and then deliberately crash into the planet so that it won't pose any threat of biological contamination to moons such as Europa, which scientists believe may have a liquid ocean beneath its surface.

Helpful Hints For Completing Your Home Improvement Projects

Home improvement is a fantastic way to spruce up an outdated d?cor or to give your home a new look. There are so many different options when it comes to home improvement while fitting almost anybody's budget. Painting, wallpaper or even just new curtains are a few examples that will give any home a fresh look for a minimal price.

Windows

To reduce the number of unwanted pests in your home, cut back shrubbery and plants that are close to the windows. These plants are great homes to insects and spiders. If they rub up against your house and windows, they can easily crawl inside to find a warm dry place. Cut back these bushes to a foot or more from the side of the house and under the windows.

Add shutters to the outside windows on your home for a dramatic change in architecture. If your exterior looks a bit drab or flat, you can use this simple tip to give it much more depth and interest. Paint them a coordinating color to your house, often the color of the front door.

Try installing some flower boxes outside your home. Try installing them in your windows or on the front porch railings. They are a relatively cheap home improvement project too. You have to buy soil and regularly maintain the flowers though. If these aren't for you, try buying gardens in pots and placing them on your porch or front steps.

Velfac Fenster can be very interesting information for you.

A great tip for home improvement is to inspect your windows and see if they need to be replaced. The key here is to make sure you are going to get enough value for what you pay for. If the windows just need some maintenance it is better to do that than replace because windows are a major investment.

Doors And Windows

Insulate your home in order to save energy and lower your heating and cooling bills. Check the attic, as well as windows and doors. Any leaky spots should be fixed. Weather stripping can be added to doors and windows and new insulation can be added to the attic. You want to keep air that you paid to heat or cool, inside the home.

When it comes to home improvement, consider replacing your windows and doors. This not only has a chance of greatly improving the value of the home, but may also severely decrease the amount of money required to keep your house warm and dry. You can also add extra security with new doors and windows.

Hunt down drafts in your house around your windows and doors, and seal them with insulation or weather-stripping to make your home more energy-efficient. On a breezy day, hold a lit candle or a stick of burning incense around the edges of your doors and windows -- with the drapes tied back away from the edges -- to easily spot drafty areas as the flame moves or the smoke wafts.

Be sure that your doors and windows have tight seals to keep out extreme temperatures and to insure the best air quality in your home. If the air coming into your home is filtered through your heating and cooling system, you will have less chances of contracting air-borne illness.

In conclusion, it can be quite easy and affordable to improve your home's appearance. If you are doing it yourself and only working on simple projects it will become obviously worth the little money spent. There are many options and styles available to suit everyone's needs. Who doesn't want to walk into their home and feel aesthetically refreshed?

Below is an article titled back to uni the empty room and all the stuff that we collected from various sources. All credit goes to its original author. just enjoy this....thanks

back to uni the empty room and all the stuff

Moving out to go to University means nothing but a ton of stuff in a very cramped room. Packing is the perfect time to purge and organize! But what do you get rid of? What do you keep? What do you do with all the memories?

Sorting: Keep, Maybe, Toss

As you are going through your things, label three large boxes KEEP, MAYBE, TOSS.

  • TOSS box should be all items you are getting rid of. Pick out items you can donate to local clothing banks, school programs, and shelters to reduce waste. Throw out the rest.
  • MAYBE box should be things you are unsure about. Go through this box again and as you do, ask yourself:
Who might enjoy this more than me?
Do I already have something else with the same memory?
  • Your KEEP box should be full of items that you wish to keep requiring appropriate storage.

Where do I Store Everything?

Here are some great organizational storage solutions:

  1. Start a photo wall. Pictures are one of the best ways to hold on to memories.
    1. Install additional storage such as bookshelves or drawers. Use boxes, baskets, and cubbies for organized storage.
    2. Take photos of some of your memories and create an album rather than keeping all of the items themselves to save space.
    3. Store things in clear plastic containers with labels. You can put them in the basement storage room, under the stairs or even in the garage.

Where do you keep your memories?

Statistical analysis questions evidence discouraging retreatment, coverage

PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] Most doctors treat Lyme disease with antibiotics for two to four weeks after diagnosis, but if symptoms persist after that, medical guidelines recommend against antibiotic retreatment. That recommendation may not be warranted. A newly published statistical review of the four studies upon which those guidelines are based reports flaws in design, analysis, and interpretation that call into question the strength of the evidence against retreatment.

Allison DeLong, a biostatistician at Brown University's Center for Statistical Sciences and lead author of the study published online Aug. 19, 2012, in Contemporary Clinical Trials, said the four studies do not prove that retreatment does not work. That questionable interpretation, however, has led doctors to forgo treatment and insurance companies to withhold reimbursement.

"The goal of the paper is to clarify what was actually found from these clinical trials and what could be said and what couldn't be said," DeLong said. "A lack of evidence should not be used to deny treatment when the studies have serious flaws."

Evidence in the trials is most often inconclusive, she and three co-authors found. Two studies even found some statistically significant benefits from antibiotics.

DeLong has been curious about Lyme disease retreatment for more than a decade since a friend of hers seemed to benefit from therapy. Her friend paid for the treatment out-of-pocket. Statisticians would call that anecdote an "n of 1," but the example stuck with DeLong as more people, including journalists, began to question whether retreatment really was ineffective.

In 2009 and 2010, DeLong and her colleagues decided to look into the matter with full statistical rigor. Their analysis started by scanning the medical literature for any randomized clinical trials offering evidence of the efficacy of antibiotic retreatment for Lyme disease. Careful review of more than 100 studies ultimately whittled the field down to the four studies on which the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the American Academy of Neurology are based their guidelines.

The most influential studies were conducted by Klempner et al., and published together in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2001. The multicenter trials enrolled chronic Lyme sufferers with positive or negative blood serum results for Immunoglobulin G, an antibody that might indicate active infection. In each of the IgG positive and negative groups, patients either received IV antibiotics followed by oral antibiotics or IV placebo followed by oral placebo. Their symptoms were measured along the way using a subjective set of health quality-of-life measures called the SF-36.

Although Klempner et al. found no significant benefit to retreatment, findings from subsequent SF-36 studies in chronic illnesses provide evidence that the Klempner study was looking for unrealistically large differences.

"The trials, as designed, called for treatment effects considerably larger than the minimum clinically important differences (MCID) identified in other chronic illnesses, suggesting that the sample sizes were inadequate and the trials were very likely underpowered to detect the true underlying MCIDs," DeLong and her co-authors wrote in the journal.

Klempner's statistics showed that treatment might or might not have been effective given the broad range of a statistical measure known as the confidence interval, DeLong said.

In another of the four trials conducted by Krupp et al., researchers found that retreatment produced a significant benefit for fatigue, but the authors of the study mistakenly discounted that result, DeLong said.

The authors became concerned that their results were tainted by too many subjects realizing that they were receiving real treatment instead of the placebo. The measure of fatigue is subjective and could be influenced by that realization. But DeLong found that the subjects weren't likely to have realized anything. Here's why: If the members of each group have a blindly optimistic seven in 10 chance of believing that they received real medicine, then the people who really were would be right seven out of 10 times and the people receiving the placebo would only be right 3 out of 10 times. The people receiving the medicine would seem like they had discovered their status, but in reality they were only making a lucky, optimistic guess.

While the Krupp study was adequately powered to measure a significant benefit from fatigue, it had less power to measure the two other treatment effects it considered: improvements in cognitive processing and clearance of a potential Lyme disease biomarker, DeLong said.

The last of the four studies, by Fallon et al., had a very small sample size. It found hints of some benefits from retreatment but nothing definitive either positively or negatively.

Ultimately, DeLong said, the best evidence to support or refute antibiotic retreatment will come when scientists develop a definitive test for active Lyme disease infection. In the interim, it is possible that chronic Lyme disease patients harbor an ongoing infection that antibiotics could treat.

"The interpretation of the trials goes too far," she said. "You can't say it's been shown that retreatment is not beneficial. You can't then jump to the conclusion that this shows there is no persistence of infection."

In addition to DeLong, the paper's other authors are statistics graduate student Barbara Blossom of Colorado State University, Dr. Elizabeth Maloney of Wyoming, Minn., and Dr. Steven Phillips of Greenwich Hospital in Connecticut.

Gambia on edge amid mass executions

Gambia's President Yahya Jammeh came under attack Tuesday for sending nine prisoners to the firing squad, leaving the tiny nation jittery as another 38 convicts await execution in the coming weeks.

The 47-year-old former soldier, who seized power in a 1994 coup, dismissed concerns expressed by the African Union and rights bodies that had urged him not to carry out his plans and executed a first batch of prisoners on Sunday night.

"We are absolutely dumbfounded by this news," said Alioune Tine of the Dakar-based African Assembly for the Defense of Human Rights.

"It is a case of madness at the head of a country, a paranoiac at the head of Gambia and that is dangerous for Africa," Tine said.

Calling for the "total isolation" of the Gambian leader, who often heaps derision on criticism from the West, Tine urged a halt to meetings of the African Commission on Human and People's Rights, which has its headquarters in Banjul.

Gambia's interior ministry announced Monday that nine death row prisoners had been executed by firing squad on Sunday night, a week after Jammeh vowed to carry out all death sentences by mid-September.

Two of those killed, one of them a woman, were Senegalese citizens, and Senegal's President Macky Sall said he "deeply regrets" the killings, in a statement from his spokesman.

"Macky Sall calls on Gambia to urgently suspend all executions," read the statement.

Another Senegalese citizen is still on death row in Gambia, which is surrounded by Senegal except for a strip of Atlantic coast.

Commonwealth spokesman Richard Uku said in a statement the executions were "a matter of grave concern" and urged the government of the former British colony, a member of the 54-state Commonwealth, to renounce its plans.

The European Union has also demanded "an immediate halt" to the executions.

Amnesty International estimates a further 38 prisoners are on death row.

"We are appalled that the Gambian authorities carried out the nine executions and urge them to ensure that no further executions take place," said Paule Rigaud, the rights group's deputy director for Africa.

Jammeh, who has woven an aura of mysticism around himself, dressing in billowing white robes and always clutching his Koran, is accused of ruling the tiniest nation on the African mainland with an iron fist, brooking no dissent.

The president's feared plain-clothes security officers could be seen on the streets of Banjul on Tuesday, and tension was palpable among citizens, who were afraid to talk about the executions lest they be recorded by his agents and punished.

In a televised address to mark this year's Muslim feast of Eid al-Fitr, Jammeh said: "By the middle of next month, all the death sentences will have been carried out to the letter.

"There is no way my government will allow 99 percent of the population to be held to ransom by criminals."

The regime of the man who says he can cure AIDS is often pilloried for human rights abuses, enforced disappearances, extra-judicial killings, torture and muzzling journalists.

Many top officials have found themselves charged with treason, often related to coup plots which observers have said are a sign of paranoia by Jammeh, who won a fourth term in office in November 2011.

Last year eight military top brass, including the former army and intelligence chiefs and the ex-deputy head of the police force, were sentenced to death for treason.

Jammeh also regularly reshuffles top officials.

On Sunday night state television reported that Education Minister Mambury Nie had been sacked a week after being moved into the portfolio from the foreign ministry.

In the past few months former army chiefs, heads of the navy and presidential guard and other generals have been sacked and deployed as deputy ambassadors around the world.

Prior to Sunday, the last official execution in Gambia was in 1985 and Amnesty International had considered Gambia to be among the 22 of Africa's 54 states that had in practice abolished capital punishment.

The nation of 1.7 million people survives mostly off tourism, luring sun-worshipping Europeans to its sweeping, palm-fringed coastline, and agriculture.

?

Happy Friday! I have a very exciting project to share with everyone today. One of the best parts about the blog world is meeting other creative bloggers and being able to put your creative heads together to create something wonderful. Today I am collaborating with my friend Angie from Dishes Undressed.

We met through our Blogging 2.0 class and were both immediately drawn to the idea of swapping food recipes from halfway around the globe. Angie is blogging to us from Great Britain while I reside in my small town in the Midwest United States. This is going to be a fantastic adventure because I love stepping out of my comfort zone with food and trying things I would have never thought of. We are going to do a 4 part series (cocktail, appetizer, main course, and dessert) for which we both give each other a recipe that is traditional to our countries.

Today I am starting off with the Lemongrass cooler recipe that Angie sent over. This was particularly exciting for me because 1. as many of you know ? I am currently OBSESSED with making simple syrups for drinks and 2. I have never cooked with lemongrass and didn?t know anything about it.

I had to get the lemongrass pre-cut and packaged because that seems to be the only way they sell it here in Bloomington but I?ve gathered that it usually comes in long stalk form. I also learned that is it used in many Thai curries and stews which means my head has already been spinning with ideas for my next lemongrass adventure.

The simple syrup turned out wonderful. Easy to make but very fragrant and flavorful. I used it make a little gin cocktail last night that was absolutely stunning. The lemongrass stalk made for a perfect garnish as well!

I also stumbled upon a great use for the leftover syrup. The syrup was so delicious that I may have added it to my morning cup of tea as ? okay, I DID add it and it sweetened and gave the tea a hint of lemon. Delicious.

?

?

Lemongrass Cooler

  • 4 cups water
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 lemon stalks, chopped into 3 inch chunks
  • Juice from 1 lime
  • carbonated water
  • extra lemon grass, for garnish
  • 1 oz of gin, optional
  • Ice

?

To make the simple syrup: In a small saucepan, bring the lemongrass, water, lime and sugar to a boil. Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved into the mixture. Boil for 10 minutes or until the mixture has thickened. Remove from heat and let it come to room temperatures.

Combine in a glass with some carbonated water, a shot of gin, and ice.

Keep leftover syrup in the fridge and use the next mornings to sweeten your tea!

Business Presentation Clinic ? How to conclude and end your ...

Recently I saw a series of presentations where the presenters reached the last slide and concluded by saying something like, ?Thank you for your attention. Do you have any questions?? This felt abrupt.

A slightly better?but still not great?approach is putting up a summary of three to eight bullet points of everything the presenter has covered that day. This is not only predictable?it fails to inspire the audience to take action.

An even better approach is to provide a clear signal to let your audience know you?re coming to the end of your presentation. One of the most effective approaches is returning to the original idea?the situation and the problem you presented at the start?and re-interpreting it, using the information you shared have with your audience. This bookends your presentation.

Business presentations?unlike presentations that are designed to entertain?should also have a clear, practical call to action. You should make it clear what the audience needs to do next to derive the benefit you promised?such as, ?Sign up for a free account at something for all dot com today.?

Try it next time: conclude by expressing your thesis?the opening?from another point of view, and if relevant, ask the audience to act on something specific. Watch what happens. Learn and adjust. Ending your presentations this way is much better than ?Thank you, and that concludes my presentation.?

Florida, Ohio, and Wisconsin Don't Like The Republican Medicare Plan

Voters in three swing states are down on the Republican plans for Medicare, but the race remains tight in a nationwide poll today. Also, Obama's maintaining something of a lead in Ohio and an even bigger one in Pennsylvania. Here's our guide to today's polls and why they matter.

RELATED: Romney Shows Forward Momentum in Three Swing States

Findings:?A majority of voters in three swing states ? hovering around 60 percent in each ? want Medicare to remain as it is rather than change it "to a system in which the government would provide seniors with a fixed amount of money toward purchasing private health insurance or Medicare insurance" as?Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan are proposing, according to a new poll. The Romney-Ryan option attracts less than a third of voters.
Pollster:?Quinnipiac University/New York Times/CBS News
Methodology: Telephone interviews with 1,241 Florida voters, 1,253 Ohio voters, and 1,190 Wisconsin August 15 through 21 voters with a margin of error of +/-2.8 percent in all.
Why it matters: As The New York Times' Michael Cooper and Dalia Sussman?note, Medicare?got its status as a big campaign topic following the addition of Ryan to the ticket, the man "who is perhaps best known for proposing a budget plan, supported by Mr. Romney, to overhaul Medicare to rein in its costs."?These results show that regardless of whether Ryan is helping the ticket, voters in swing states are not happy with his plans for Medicare. The Hill's Daniel Strauss?puts it simply: "poll suggests Romney could be hurt on Medicare because of his selection of Ryan as his running mate."?

RELATED: Obama Up in Florida, Ohio, and Pennsylvania

Caveat:?It's unclear what this exactly does. The poll shows Obama's lead has narrowed in Florida and Wisconsin, and remained the same in Ohio. Also, as The Huffington Post's Mark Blumenthal and Ariel Edwards-Levy note, the question about how voters would like to see Medicare "did not mention that Romney and Ryan support this change." Finally, nearly 50 percent of voters in each state said they would support "minor reductions" to Medicare spending to help reduce the federal deficit.

RELATED: A Guide to 2012's Swing States

Findings:?Obama leads 48 percent to 45 percent among registered voters in a new national poll.?
Pollster:?USC Annenberg/Los Angeles Times
Methodology:?Telephone interviews with 1,009 registered voters ? 954 of whom were considered likely voters ? conducted August 13 through 19 with a margin of error of +/-3.1 percentage points for registered voters and +/-3.2 for likely.
Why it matters:?These numbers reflect something similar to what we noted in our Poll Watch yesterday. The?Los Angeles Times' David Lauter writes that the results "speak to the remarkable stability of the presidential race, in which Obama has held a small lead in most polls since April."?
Caveat:?Obama's lead is even tighter among those deemed likely to vote: 48 percent to 46 percent.

RELATED: Bain Attacks Are Working in Swing States

Findings:?A poll out of Ohio finds Obama leading 49 percent to Romney's 46 percent ? within the poll's margin of error.?
Pollster:?Ohio Poll/University of Cincinnati
Methodology:?Telephone interviews of 847 likely voters in Ohio between August 16 and 21 with a margin of error of +/-3.4 percent.
Why it matters: This poll comes as the Quinnipiac poll gives Obama a comfier six point lead in the state among likely voters, and the?Los Angeles Times' Joseph Tanfani points out?that voters there "have been hit with an onslaught of campaign ads and candidate rallies for months."?That said, as Aaron Blake notes in The?Washington Post, ?a bunch of swing state polls have been moving toward Romney, and a poll last week in the state "was the first since May to show Romney leading."?
Caveat:?According to the Cincinnati poll: 17 percent of voters say they may change their mind before the election or are undecided.

RELATED: Romney Weakened Against Obama

Findings:?Obama leads by nine points in Pennsylvania: 49 percent to Romney's 40 percent.?
Pollster:?The Morning Call/Muhlenberg College
Methodology:?Survey of 422 likely voters between August 20 and 22 with a margin of error of +/-5 percent.?
Why it matters:?Pennsylvania is still considered a swing state, but The Morning Call has it as a "lean-blue" and that seems about right with this big a lead.
Caveat:?That said, The Post's Blake writes: "Franklin and Marshall College, which showed Romney down by 12 points in early June, last week showed him closing to within five points in this blue-leaning state."?

New GOP scare tactic: OMG, Obama is pro-choice. But, like, for reals!

Well, this should work. Since the entire country is busy throwing up in its collective mouth at Republican Party's pathological obsession with abortion, this seems like a perfect time for Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus to shift the conversation to something else. Like abortion:

The new obsession is the platform of the Republican Party on abortion, which is an obsession. What about the obsession about a guy who believes in partial-birth abortion. I mean, what about that obsession? Why aren't we talking about that very minority view of abortion in our country that this president holds dear to his heart. We're not talking about that.
Yes. Yes, the top spokesman for the Republican Party did just complain that everyone is obsessed with his party's obsession with abortion?for no reason at all whatsoever that he can understand. And he doesn't like it at all.

So let's help him out with something else he won't like: facts.

The current Congress has introduced 67 abortion bills. Fifty-four of them were introduced by Republicans. A sampling:

And we're not even talking about the 900 bills introduced at the state level last year. ?

If those bills seem ridiculous, not to mention redundant, that's because they are. None of them are based on facts of any kinds. There is no such thing as taxpayer-funded abortion. There is no such thing as fetal pain. There is no such thing as on-campus abortion providers for elementary schools. There is no such thing as sex-selective abortion. And there is no reason to require a woman to undergo and view an ultrasound before undergoing an abortion.

All of these bills had, at best, a 2 percent chance of being enacted. All of them are a waste of time. And all of them were introduced and co-sponsored by Republicans, many of them by, that's right, vice presidential candidate Rep. Paul Ryan. Paul Ryan, who believes that a woman should have to carry a pregnancy to term even if it kills her.

Gosh, it sure is hard to understand why people think Republicans are obsessed with abortion, isn't it? Even though, this week, the party once again included in its platform support for a constitutional amendment banning all abortions.

And Priebus wants to know why we aren't talking about President Obama's "obsession" with abortion?

Well, maybe it's because President Obama hasn't asked for, supported, or signed any abortion bills?except, of course, for his executive order banning non-existent taxpayer-funded abortions.

Still, Priebus would like us to focus on President Obama's "obsession" with "partial birth abortion"?something you won't find in any medical textbooks because it doesn't exist.

It's not exactly breaking news that the president supports women's reproductive rights. He hasn't taken any action to enshrine or expand those rights, but Republicans are so desperate right now to divert national focus from their anti-woman extremism that they actually think reminding voters that the president supports reproductive rights is a winning argument for them. As if voters who currently support the president will be turned off when they find out that he has consistently supported reproductive rights, instead of just pretending to be offended by extremism when he thinks it suits him. As the Republicans have done this week, while trying to distance themselves from Todd Akin, whose positions on abortion represent the Republican Party, its platform, and its presidential ticket this year.

It won't work. It's transparently stupid. But then, that's today's Republican Party for you.

Antec SP1 portable Bluetooth speaker stops by the FCC

Antec SP1 portable Bluetooth speaker stops by the FCC

The last Antec product that blipped on our radar was many moons ago, but it looks as though the company is having a second stab at audio hardware in its latest filing with the FCC. The documents reveal a new Bluetooth speaker going by the handle SP1 and assuming more of a Braven form factor, as opposed to the pocket-sized trend. Antec's Rockus 3D|2.1 speakers were aimed at the higher end of the market, but we would be tempted to bet that the SP1's focus is a little broader. We've struggled to dig up any more detail on the speaker, like launch plans or pricing, but did stumble upon a particularly glamorous advert, which you'll find after the break.
