Scientists from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem have developed a prototype system that could one day aid the congenitally blind by converting video into auditory cues. The "Sonar Vision" works in a similar way to a bat's echolocation system, but instead of chirping, uses a video camera embedded in a pair of glasses. A laptop or smartphone then converts the images into sound, which is transmitted to a headset. After 70 hours or so of training, that allowed users to identify objects like faces or houses, position objects in space and even identify individual letters. Surprisingly, researchers also found that after only several hours using the device, regions of the cerebral cortex dedicated to sight became activated for the first time in the congenitally sightless. That could possibly let doctors "wake up" regions of the brain never before used, according to the team, "even after a lifetime of blindness."
CHICAGO (Reuters) - Illinois decided on Thursday to delay until April 9 an election to fill the U.S. House seat vacated by Democratic Representative Jesse Jackson Jr., who resigned last week amid an ethics investigation and concerns over his health.
Illinois Governor Pat Quinn had said on Monday that the special election would be March 19 after a primary on February 26.
But the state Senate voted on Thursday to delay the vote until April to coincide with local elections and save money for the state, which faces a financial crisis. The state House had approved the change on Wednesday.
The winner of the February Democratic primary will be favored in the general election because Jackson's majority African-American district is solidly Democratic.
A number of Democrats have said they intend to run, including state Senators Donne Trotter and Toi Hutchinson, former U.S. Representative Mel Reynolds and Chicago Alderman Anthony Beale.
Reynolds had held Jackson's seat before resigning in 1995 after being convicted on criminal charges of sexual assault and solicitation of pornography.
Chicago Pastor Corey Brooks also is considering a run, a spokeswoman said.
Media reports said former U.S. Representative Debbie Halvorson, who lost to Jackson this year in the primaries, also plans to run for the seat.
In his two-page resignation letter, Jackson, 47, who has been treated for bipolar disorder and is reportedly under investigation for possible misuse of campaign funds, acknowledged he was the target of a federal probe and in possible plea talks.
"I am aware of the ongoing federal investigation into my activities and I am doing my best to address the situation responsibly, cooperate with the investigators and accept responsibility for my mistakes," Jackson wrote.
Jackson easily won re-election on November 6 despite the ethics questions.
His resignation did not result in any change in the political balance of power in the U.S. House of Representatives, which has a solid Republican majority.
Jackson was treated for at least six weeks this summer at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, for bipolar disorder, a psychological condition marked by extreme mood swings.
He has also been the subject of a House ethics committee probe over an alleged bribe offered by a Jackson supporter in 2008 to then Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich.
The bribe was said to be intended to entice Blagojevich to appoint Jackson to the U.S. Senate seat vacated by President Barack Obama. Jackson has admitted to lobbying for the seat, but denied knowing about any money offered to Blagojevich, who has since been convicted on corruption charges and imprisoned.
According to news reports citing unnamed sources, Jackson is also being investigated by the FBI over possible misuse of campaign money. The FBI has not confirmed the reports.

The new SHOUTcast album artwork feature in Album Washer is based on a metadata look-up, so the accuracy of the look-up depends on the quality of the data provided by the SHOUTcast station broadcaster.
The civil war-torn nation of Syria has seemingly disappeared from the internet. In a sign that the regime of President Bashar al-Assad is trying to limit the flow of information and possibly increase its violent crackdown on opposition forces, all 84 blocks of IP addresses used by the nation have gone offline. The blackout was first reported by Renesys this morning at around 5:26am ET and the #SyriaBlackout hashtag has started picking up steam on Twitter as others have noticed. While it's unclear exactly what has happened and investigations are on going, and a nationwide outage is highly suspicious. The Associated Press is reporting that rebels are laying blame for the blackout at the feet of the government and that cellphone service has also been severed. We'll update as more information rolls in, but we wouldn't expect good news.
Update: Akamai has provided more confirmation of the outage. As you can see in the image above, at some point this morning the amount of data coming out of Syria simply dropped to zero.

Researchers report first success of targeted therapy in most common non-small cell lung cancerPublic release date: 28-Nov-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

BOSTON - A new study by an international team of investigators led by Dana-Farber Cancer Institute scientists is the first to demonstrate that chemotherapy and a new, targeted therapy work better in combination than chemotherapy alone in treating patients with the most common genetic subtype of lung cancer.
Published online today in The Lancet Oncology, the combination of chemotherapy and the targeted drug selumetinib was more effective than chemotherapy alone in a clinical trial involving patients with a form of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) that carries a mutation in the gene KRAS a variety that represents about 20 percent of all NSCLC cases. Previously, no targeted agent, either alone or in combination with another drug, had proven beneficial in a trial involving patients with this type of NSCLC.
The 87 patients who participated in the new, phase II trial conducted at 67 sites around the world had advanced, KRAS-mutant NSCLC that had failed initial chemotherapy. The participants were randomly assigned to receive either selumetinib and the chemotherapy agent docetaxel or docetaxel alone.
Investigators found that while 37 percent of the patients in the selumetinib group experienced some shrinkage of their tumor, none of the patients in the docetaxel-only group did. Of particular significance, patients receiving selumetinib lived a median of 5.3 months before their cancer began to worsen, compared to 2.1 months for those receiving chemotherapy alone. (Patients in the selumetinib group also survived longer, on average, than those in the docetaxel group 9.4 months compared to 5.2 months but the improvement was not considered statistically significant.)
"Our findings suggest that selumetinib and docetaxel work synergistically each enhancing the effect of the other," says the study's lead author, Pasi A. Janne, MD, PhD, of Dana-Farber. "This opens the possibility that there may finally be a therapeutic strategy using a targeted therapy which could be clinically effective in this population of KRAS-mutant lung cancer patients."
Some side effects, including neutropenia (a white blood cell deficiency), neuropenia plus fever, shortness of breath, and loss of strength, were more common in the selumetinib group than the other.
Researchers and physicians will need to work on ways of managing these problems with patients, Jnne said.
NSCLC tumors with KRAS mutations are more common in current and former smokers than in those who have never smoked, and occur at a higher rate in Caucasians than in others. The study findings are especially noteworthy because mutated KRAS regardless of the type of tumor it appears in has been one of the most difficult genes to block with targeted therapies.
Selumetinib circumvents that problem by targeting not KRAS itself, but one of the gene's co-conspirators, a protein called MEK that is indirectly activated by KRAS.
"The opportunity now is to validate this approach in further clinical trials so it can be developed into a real therapy for patients," Jnne remarks. "Given that KRAS mutations are common in other cancers (found in 90 percent of pancreatic cancers and 40 percent of colon cancers), our findings may be useful in developing therapies for patients with these cancers as well."

He was so good at talking to people on TV that "The Simpsons" gently mocked his folksy, aw-shucks demeanor. But now it looks as if Huell Howser intends to fade away without comment.
Howser, the white-maned public TV host with the Southern accent who's famed for blurting out "That's amazing!" during interviews, has retired from making original episodes of his program "California's Gold," which travels around the state tracking down interesting people and places. The shows air on numerous statewide public TV stations, including KCET-TV Channel 28.
Speculation that the 67-year-old Howser is seriously ill has been circulating among local TV industry veterans in recent weeks, and insiders reported that he has not been seen for months at his Los Angeles office. On Tuesday the Sacramento Bee reported that Howser was retiring but added that he doesn't wish to make an official announcement.
PHOTOS: The awe of Huell Howser
"Huell is retiring from filming new shows or making appearances (or interviews) but the show will continue to air in reruns for awhile," Ryan Morris, Howser's assistant, wrote in an email to The Times. "We have been gradually winding down all year but Huell has decided to stop, come December 31st."
As for the talk about Howser's ill health, Morris added: "I have heard the rumors and while Huell does not always tell me everything, he seems to be doing fine. He is just trying to get away from television and enjoy some free time."
Howser arrived at his unique local celebrity through fate and his own industriousness. A Tennessee native, he worked as a features reporter for the station now known as KCBS-Channel 2. During the 1980s he switched to making documentaries and interview programs about California, punctuated by his homespun enthusiasms ("Oh my gosh!" is one frequently heard interjection).
He kept the costs low, producing the programs himself with a small staff. He has no agent or publicist and likes to keep the production techniques primitive to avoid rattling his subjects: "If you have a sound guy with a big boom mike it's intimidating as hell," he told The Times in 2009.
But the past few years have proven difficult for Howser. KCET left PBS after a bitter dispute with the network, and Howser, who preferred to keep good relations with everyone, was trapped in the middle, privately unhappy with KCET's move but determined to remain supportive of the station he'd called his home base for years.
A KCET spokeswoman did not answer an email seeking comment Tuesday.
Nevertheless, the sizable legion of Howser fans ensures a legacy that will remain for years.
"No one said 'Wow!' like Huell Howser ? everything about California turned him into a kid on Christmas morning," said Martin Kaplan, the Norman Lear chair in Entertainment, Media and Society at USC. "He was about as far from irony as you can get. He made corny cool."
"Simpsons" co-creator Matt Groening is a longtime fan, so much so that in 2005 the animated series mocked him with a character thinly veiled as Howell Huser.
"Everyone at 'The Simpsons' does a Huell Howser impression," Groening told The Times in 2009. "We all love him. I have on my permanent do-not-delete TiVo Huell's visit to the Bunny Museum."

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Brent crude rose above $111 per barrel on Tuesday as optimism coursed through financial markets after Greece's international lenders reached a deal on a new debt target, although worries about a looming U.S. fiscal crisis kept a lid on gains.
The euro hit a one-month high and Asian shares climbed for a seventh straight day after euro zone finance ministers and the International Monetary Fund agreed on a package of measures to reduce Greek debt needed to release another tranche of loans to the near-bankrupt economy.
Brent crude was up 13 cents at $111.05 a barrel by 0301 GMT and U.S. crude gained 24 cents to $87.98, following losses on Monday.
Oil prices were also supported by a softer dollar, which makes commodities priced in the greenback cheaper for holders of other currencies.
But traders cautioned that oil price gains may be checked as the longer-term outlook for Europe remained uncertain.
"Markets for now are pricing in that Greece will be refunded, but there are structural problems about the euro zone that needs fixing," said Ben Taylor, sales trader at CMC Markets in Sydney.
"It's amazing how (Europe) keeps finding ways to buy themselves more time. They've simply kicked the can down the road for the moment."
FISCAL CLIFF
Market attention is now expected to focus on the fiscal policy standoff in the United States. A lack of progress on that front will muddy the outlook for demand from the United States, the world's top oil consumer.
Republicans in the U.S. Congress on Monday called on President Barack Obama to detail long-term spending cuts to help solve the country's fiscal crisis, while holding firm against the income tax rate increases for the wealthy that Democrats seek.
While Congress returned from its Thanksgiving holiday break amid increasing talk about long-term tax reform plans and a need to compromise, the two parties showed no signs yet of having found a way around the short-term tax obstacle necessary to head off the fiscal cliff on December 31.
"If we do hit the fiscal cliff, the U.S. will dip back into a recession which is not good for anyone," Taylor said.
The fiscal cliff's approximately $600 billion in tax hikes and spending cuts that would begin in 2013 would push the U.S. economy back into recession, according to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office.
"We do see markets, at least for now still pricing in some kind of agreement to take place before the end of the year, but we're going to have to see compromise from both parties."
SUPPLY CONCERNS
The oil market is also keeping an eye on the political crisis in Egypt that has triggered worries about supply.
President Mohamed Mursi provoked outrage last week that led to violent protests when he issued a decree that put beyond judicial review any decision he takes until a new parliament is elected, drawing charges he had given himself the powers of a modern-day pharaoh.
Egypt's ruling Islamists tried to defuse the political crisis on Monday, with Mursi backing a compromise over his seizure of extended powers and his Muslim Brotherhood calling off a planned demonstration.
But opponents plan to go ahead with a big demonstration on Tuesday to demand he scrap the decree, threatening more turmoil for a nation that has been stumbling towards democracy for almost two years since president Hosni Mubarak was ousted.
News that OPEC member Nigeria is expected to see oil exports drop to 1.98 million barrels per day in January from a planned 2.12 million bpd in December also supported crude.
Traders are now waiting for weekly U.S. inventory data due out on Tuesday and Wednesday. Analysts forecast a build in crude and refined product stockpiles for the week to November 23.
Q: We lost our Soft-Coated Wheaton Terrier, and it's still very difficult to talk about and deal with the loss. Poor Gracie, our other dog, has also had a tough time, and it's been heartbreaking. I think Gracie is still waiting for McGee to come home. There's no way to tell her that's not going to happen. How can we help Gracie through this difficult period? -- S.O., Chicago, IL.
A: I'm very sorry for your loss. I -- and many other readers -- have felt a similar hole in our hearts.?We don't really know what surviving pets are thinking when it appears for all the world as if they're grieving. They may be, or they may be merely picking up on our sorrow. It could be they're only responding to a sudden change in the household - or the changes may be a combination of all those things. Personally, I'm convinced that pets (who we know, for a fact, feel emotion) can grieve. But why do some pets appear absolutely unaffected by the loss of a best pal? No one knows.
"On average, people actually take about two years to grieve the loss of a loved one," says Sue Yellen, Glenview, IL-based clinical psychologist and chicagonow.com blogger. "I suspect many pets do grieve, though we don't understand that grieving period."
She adds, "It's a difficult balance, you want to give attention to people who are grieving, and I believe the same is true for grieving pets. However, you also don't want to reward sad behavior too much."
Try to keep a regular schedule for Gracie's activities, so there's a consistent structure to her life. Feed her and take her for walks at about the same time you always have. Playing with a dog's favorite toy is probably the best antidote (for dogs who enjoy play), and the exercise is a great outlet for both you and your pet.

When Elizabeth Howard went to an event supporting the homeless about six years ago, she was thinking about pet food.
?I knew I wanted to do something to help the homeless people, but I?m an animal rights activist and have been for quite a while now,? she said. ?So I thought, ?Well, OK, I?ll get the pet food for the homeless people for their dogs and cats.??
Howard started the Home Van Pet Care Project five years ago, a companion to the Home Van, a nonprofit that feeds the homeless.
She said she started with ?one little bag? of pet food someone donated. Now, the Gainesville nonprofit donates 100 pounds each of dog food and cat food every week.
After following the Home Van with her own car for awhile, Howard began distributing the pet food ? packed in gallon-size Ziploc bags ? on Wednesdays at the library.
Howard said she isn?t sure how much longer she can sustain the program, though. The nonprofit needs more hands to pack bags of food and deliver them, she said.
?It?s a little scary right now,? she said. ?I don?t know which way to go with some of this.?
Howard said?although it?s hard to care for pets, the homeless need the love and companionship pets provide. She emphasized because Home Van Pet Care is?a type of food bank, the food it provides is only a supplement and not enough to sustain pets.
?We try to get everybody to find out where they can get more food and how they can feed their animals well,? she said.

ITHACA, N.Y. Are juicier, sweeter, more disease-resistant watermelons on the way? An international consortium of more than 60 scientists from the United States, China, and Europe has published the genome sequence of watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) information that could dramatically accelerate watermelon breeding toward production of a more nutritious, tastier and more resistant fruit. The watermelon genome sequence was published in the Nov. 25 online version of the journal Nature Genetics.
The researchers discovered that a large portion of disease resistance genes were lost in the domestication of watermelon. With the high-quality watermelon sequence now complete, it is hoped that breeders can now use the information to recover some of these natural disease defenses.
The authors reported that the genome of the domesticated watermelon contained 23,440 genes, roughly the same number of genes as in humans. The group compared the genomes of 20 different watermelons and developed a first-generation genetic variation map for watermelon. This information allowed them to identify genomic regions that have been under human selection, including those associated with fruit color, taste and size.
"Watermelons are an important cash crop and among the top five most consumed fresh fruits; however, cultivated watermelons have a very narrow genetic base, which presents a major bottleneck to its breeding. Decoding the complete genome of the watermelon and resequencing watermelons from different subspecies provided a wealth of information and toolkits to facilitate research and breeding," said Zhangjun Fei, a scientist at the Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research at Cornell University, and one of the leaders of this project.
Fei worked with BTI scientists on different aspects of the research, including James Giovannoni, to generate the gene expression data through RNA-sequencing and Lukas Mueller to provide additional analysis to confirm the quality of the genome assembly. Fei also collaborated with Amnon Levi, a research geneticist at the USDA-ARS, U.S. Vegetable Laboratory, Charleston, S.C., on genetic mapping and identifying candidate genes that might be useful to enhance disease resistance in watermelon. The genome sequences of the watermelon are publicly available at the Cucurbit Genomics Database, which is created and maintained by Fei's group.
Believed to have originated in Africa, watermelons were cultivated by Egyptians more than 4,000 years ago, where the fruit was a source of water in dry, desert conditions. They are now consumed throughout the world with over 400 varieties in global commercial production. China leads in global production of the fruit, and the United States ranks fourth with more than 40 states involved in the industry. Despite being over 90 percent water, watermelons do contain important nutrients such as vitamins A and C, and lycopene, a compound that gives some fruits and vegetables their red color and appears to reduce the risk of certain types of cancer. Watermelon is also a natural source of citrulline, a non-essential amino acid with various health and athletic performance benefits.

ScienceDaily (Nov. 25, 2012) ? A team of scientists from Temple University School of Medicine and the University of Pennsylvania has moved another step closer to solving a decades-long mystery of how the all-important flow of calcium into the cell's power source, the mitochondria, is controlled.
By painstakingly shutting down the activity of 50 genes, one at a time, they have identified a protein, MCUR1, which hugs the inside of the mitochondrial membrane and is part of an elaborate mitochondrial channel pore system. MCUR1 acts as an accelerator to help regulate calcium coming into the mitochondria from the cell's large reservoir.
The results, appearing November 25, 2012 in an advance online issue of the journal Nature Cell Biology, may also point to new treatment opportunities. Understanding how to manipulate MCUR1 may help in the development of treatments for disease conditions involving excessive calcium in the cell, such as cardiovascular disease and stroke.
"Calcium is a key to regulate many fundamental processes in cells," said co-senior author Muniswamy Madesh, PhD, Assistant Professor of Biochemistry at Temple University School of Medicine and a member of Temple's Center for Translational Medicine. "Excessive calcium in the cell's mitochondria could lead to heart and neuronal mitochondrial dysfunction and cell death. This pathway could be contributing to disease conditions during ischemia/reperfusion injury and stroke, and this discovery opens up possible therapeutic interventions."
Maintaining calcium at an appropriate level is crucial for cells to work properly, and especially important in the mitochondria. Cells rely on mitochondria to generate usable energy in the form of the chemical ATP, which is necessary to carry out normal cellular and metabolic activities. ATP production in turn depends on calcium -- more specifically, charged calcium ions -- that can enter into the mitochondria from the cell's vast supply in the cytoplasm. Dr. Madesh, co-senior author Kevin Foskett, PhD, at the University of Pennsylvania, and their co-investigators recently described the role of a gatekeeper protein in maintaining a calcium "set point" under normal resting conditions in the mitochondria. But a long unanswered question remained: the details of how calcium entry into the mitochondria is controlled.
How MCUR1 Dictates Calcium Load
In the current study, Drs. Madesh and Foskett and their co-workers may have come closer to solving this puzzle. Dr. Madesh and his group sought to identify the genes involved in the flow of calcium into the mitochondria. They developed a way to use a technology called targeted RNA interference (RNAi) to screen 50 mitochondrial proteins, systematically testing whether eliminating the function of each of these genes individually altered the movement of calcium into the mitochondria. They found a mitochondrial inner membrane protein -- MCUR1 -- that regulates a calcium channel pore during active calcium uptake.
MCUR1 is part of a calcium channel pore called the uniporter, the existence of which has been known for some five decades. Recent studies identified two important pieces of the pore -- a subunit protein, MCU, and the gatekeeper protein, MICU1, to maintain calcium levels at a resting, set point. The researchers found that MCUR1 interacts with MCU to accelerate the movement of calcium into mitochondria when the cell's calcium level rapidly rises.
"MCUR1 is an essential third component of the uniporter complex," Dr. Madesh said. "In the absence of MCUR1, mitochondrial calcium uptake is markedly reduced, with adverse cellular consequences, including compromised cellular bioenergetics."
Without this accelerator, the mitochondria channel pore alone cannot take up calcium. When MCUR1 is physically attached to the pore, it is functional, and when it is not attached, it is much less active. "The regulator is always on, and its activity level increases when the extra-mitochondrial calcium levels increase. When there is a high calcium level, say during a disease state, the MCUR1 senses this and facilitates the channel activity, dumping calcium inside," Dr. Madesh explained.
Calcium Control as a Targeted Therapeutic
Dr. Madesh explained that in some disease conditions -- such as ischemic reperfusion injury (tissue damage that occurs when blood returns to tissue after a period without oxygen), stroke involving brain injury from ischemia, and myocardial infarction -- calcium floods into the mitochondria. "The mitochondria have a massive membrane potential and grab external calcium. The mitochondria then are overloaded and rupture, leading to cell death and possible organ injury."
Because some diseases are characterized by an overabundance of calcium in the mitochondria, a possible therapy could involve slowing down the amount of calcium coming into the mitochondria. "We want to control the calcium entering the mitochondria," he said.
"Further studies already underway should reveal the precise molecular mechanisms by which MCUR1 accelerates the channel pore MCU, providing insights into mitochondrial bioenergetics," said first author Karthik Mallilankaraman, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Biochemistry and the Center for Translational Medicine at Temple University School of Medicine.

William James and Denwood Hinds of Baltimore were close friends who had served together in the Fifth Maryland Regiment. The friendship would have remained strong if William?s sister, Lizzie James, had not become hopelessly infatuated with Denwood Hinds. Lizzie?s love set off a chain of events that not only ended her brother?s friendship with Denwood, but resulted in her own death and the murder of her father.
Date:?April 16, 1879
Location:?? Baltimore, Maryland ?
Victim:? Isaac James
Cause of Death:? Gunshot
Accused:?? Denwood & Harry Hinds
Synopsis:
In the autumn of 1878, the normally bright and vivacious Lizzie James became despondent; so much so that her mother was prompted to ask if she was unwell. Lizzie would deny that anything was wrong and briefly feign cheerfulness, then fall back into depression. But by December she could longer live with her sadness and confessed the truth to her parents: she had been intimate with her brother?s friend Denwood Hinds and now she believed she was pregnant.
William was devastated by the news and went to Robert Moore and Co. where Hinds worked as a clerk, determined to set matters straight. When Hinds said he was willing to talk about it, James said it was too late for talk; his sister was pregnant and Hinds must immediately marry her.
Hinds denied that he had seduced Lizzie or harmed her in any way. He said he thought it was all her imagination and that Lizzie was not pregnant at all. The argument grew heated and when Hinds steadfastly refused to marry Lizzie, James pulled a revolver from his back pocket and began firing. Hinds then pulled out his revolver and fired back. Though they were standing at close range, both men ran out of bullets before there were any serious wounds. The fight continued hand to hand, with each man using his pistol as a blackjack.
Hinds?s employer ran to the scene at the sound of shots and at the first opportunity, he and another member of the firm pulled the two men apart. The employer wanted to send for the police, but neither fighter wanted to involve the law, so they each went back to their home.
Hinds could not hide his injuries from his father and explained to him what the fight was about. He maintained that he had done nothing to injure Lizzie James. There was a class disparity between the James and Hinds families?Denwood?s father, William S. Hinds, owned a merchant tailor store, William James?s father, Isaac James, was a railroad engineer. While William Hinds asserted that he would never interfere in his son?s choice of a wife, he also made it clear that he did not approve of Denwood?s marrying Lizzie. The Hinds family stood behind their son and denied that Lizzie was pregnant.
Meanwhile, Lizzie?s condition was worsening. By spring she was bedridden; she was losing strength and complaining of pains. Then, one Sunday in March 1879 Lizzie passed away, expressing love for Denwood Hinds in her dying breath. It was never made clear whether or not Lizzie actually was pregnant. One account said that Lizzie died shortly before the time ?which she was to become a mother.? Other accounts are less definite, with statements like, ??Miss James died, it was said, in child-bed.? The Hinds family continued to maintain that Lizzie had died of natural causes, unrated to childbirth.
In spite of the trouble between the two families, William Hinds sent flowers to Lizzie?s funeral. Isaac paid a visit to William Hind and thanked him in person for the flowers; however he also told Hinds that he would make it his life?s mission to kill his son.? Denwood Hinds left Baltimore soon after.
On April 16, Denwood was back in Baltimore and, along with his brother Harry, met Isaac James in a stable on Carrollton Avenue. A scuffle ensued and, once again, two revolvers appeared. This time, however, Denwood was shot through the arm and Isaac James was shot once in the head and once in the heart.
The fight was witnessed from several angles and the people who saw what happened testified at the inquest. It was believed that the Hinds brothers deliberately provoked James into firing first. The Coroner?s jury ruled: ?Isaac D. James came to his death by a pistol shot in the hands of Denwood Barroll Hinds, aided and abetted by his brother, Harry Thomas Hinds, in the 16th day of April A. D. 1879.?
